Taylor, thank you for explaining your thoughts so succinctly. I had never heard this, but it makes perfect sense. I'm definitely going to be studying more about Pricilla and Aquila. Women were highly regarded by Jesus and he spoke of them and their importance often. I've learned that it was probably women who financed Jesus and the disciples in their travels. Point me in the direction of more about Pricilla, please.

I have been saying this for years! We talk about it at our WEdnesday Bible study often, but especially now because we are studying Hebrews. I just ordered a book by Ruth Hoppins that I can't wait to dive into. I think this will clinch my argument for her for sure!! Does it matter? No! Is it fun to research? Absolutely!

Taylor i love this and am convinced Priscilla was the author of Hebrews. A year or so ago, I read a commentator suggest the author could have been Mary, the mother of Jesus because she would have been teaching and writing about her Son (being a witness) etc. But have recently tried to find anything on this and it has been totally scrubbed from the internet. Have you ever heard this or know why it was taken down?

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2012/02/09/author-of-hebrews-priscilla/#comment-1088338">Michael</a>.

Hey Michael...
Really appreciate the kind words. Regardless of the authorship of Hebrews, we know for a fact that Priscilla and Aquila are a really cool tag-team combo. Really cool. They ran businesses together, the taught together, spoke together, trained leaders together. They are really impressive - and honestly, outside of Christ, these two are the people I'd like to meet most from the Bible. Just so compelling to me.

Thanks for the compliment about the argument. Again, it's not a huge deal either way. But it is an interesting side note to think about.
Take care.

Taylor,

This article is awesome and thought provoking. I have been long fascinated with this husband and wife and how it looks to me that she was respected among the first century church so much that she was allowed to teach a respected leader (Apollos) gospel truth!

I always leaned toward Paul's authorship for lack of any other better explanation, your argument seems to make perfect sense!

Thank you, Michael, Texas USA

Love that this post is still getting readers. Does it matter in the scale of things in the world of Christendom? Not even a little bit. And yet, it speaks to the importance of women in the early church.

I've thought casually about expanding the argument into a book that is buttressed on the importance of women throughout the New Testament, heck, the entirety of the Bible. Sure, gender roles were different. Yes, laws were neanderthal in nature, and still the Church valued the women. Anyway... maybe some day.

Excellent presentation and argument.
I first came to the same conclusion while a Seminary student in the late 1970's. My search for the author of Hebrews was triggered by the obvious fact that the book did not identify the author - unique in the New testAment. My thoughts parallel yours and I have argued If one removes gender, the obvious choice is Priscilla.
Again, your presentation is excellent. I shall most certainly quote from it in future discussion and sermons.
