Hey Dan,
I just added it. I haven't seen this post in years! So thanks for bringing it back to my attention. You can totally tell haven't been paying attention because the comments are full of spam! Sheesh. Anyway. Thanks for the comment. Still trying to decide if Gremlins ought to be up here or not. Hrmmm.

Until next time!

A great list bringing back lots of good memories. Like another commenter, I would have to add Planes, Trains & Automobiles to your list, an absolute ripper of a movie, an essential comedy to see.

Labyrinth was pretty dang good, dangit. hehe.

<selfjustification>Ok, so here's what happened. When I think of 80's movies - I mean as a genre - I think Molly. I think Slater. George Lucas is not an 80's film maker in my mind. Not at all</selfjustification>

But that doesn't justify any of it. Especially seeing as though Empire Strikes backs is occasionally my favorite movie of all time. So, king's to you Edmund for spotting my terrible gaffe. I will rectify it here soon. Do forgive me!

Ummmm. Wasn't there two Star Wars movies that came out in the 80's, and they don't make the Sci Fi list but Labyrinth does?

I realized that Stand By Me should not have been my close 6th place. Great movie. Good cast. But it takes place in the 60s - how can that represent the 80s? I'm so embarrassed.
Oh, and I would add Gremlins to the overall movie list, too.

Holy cow batman,
I'm a failure! No Real Genius? "I was pondering the immortal words of Socrates, who said, 'I drank WHAT?!'" I mean seriously. Val Kilmer was brilliant in that movie. And Planes Trains Too?! Yeesh. I need to have my 80's members only jacket stripped from me and handed over to you post haste. I still have another 20 or so movies in the Ghandi, Right Stuff, vein. But they aren't 80s movies per se.

I do agree with you on your criteria for determining the best 5. Totally agree. It's important to represent the era accurately and give it the props it deserves. Glad you approved of my number one. But I'm guessing the first woman who roles through here will have both our heads for some reason. But we shall see. I'd say that hopefully this post will stay under the radar, but I give it 2 months before its the most popular blog on this site. And then we are dead men. Hahah.

Thanks for the movie recommendations. If I get a chance I'll be sure to add a few.

If I could live forever in the 80s, I would. The music, the movies - they rock (although I'll take the latest Dark Knight movies over the 80s Batman series any day). This list brought back so many great memories. I once saw Amanda Peterson (Can't Buy me Love) at a pool in Greeley, CO (her hometown). This was before "Love" - right around the time she was in Explorers (1985) with Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. I was too nervous to say "hi" and now she'll never know my name.

Here are a few more movies I thought of as I read your list:
* Dirty Dancing - I don't like it much at all, but it screams "80s flick". "No one puts Baby in a corner". Come on. I listen to a radio station that plays lots of 80s music and I turn it off every single time "I've Had the Time of My Life" is played.
* Coming to America. I can't count how many times I've watched that one.
* How about "Golden Child" while we are on the topic of Eddie Murphy films?
* Flight of the Navigator was once my favorite movie - how about that as a classic 80s flick? Yeah, not so much. You can leave it off.
* Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Those aren't pillows!
* Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - breakthrough in special affects.
* Field of Dreams
* The Natural
* Real Genius - I still think of that movie when I hear "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" or pop some popcorn.
* Short Circuit
* Stand By Me
* Cocoon
* The Hunt for Red October

The top 5 needs to be not only great movies, but represent the 80s like no other film. Die Hard for example - awesome (totally awesome? rad-i-cool?) movie; a classic; but not really "80s". Top Gun - very close on that one. Footloose - classic "80s" definitely, but I hate watching guys dance.

So it is a very tough choice, but I'd have to go with these as the Top 5 - those that are great AND represent the 80s very well.
+ Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- okay, that's #1, I agree.
+ Breakfast Club
+ 16 Candles
+ Back to the Future
+ Goonies (just beats out Stand By Me).
