Last point first - 100% no robots! I literally spam block 5 - 10 comments a day from bots. So I couldn't agree with you more on that point.

Also, I like the point that you are making. It's all about support, compromise, partnership, etc. But, there is a 50% chance (based on your logic of it 100% being Ethan A) that they did partner, compromise, learn, grow, and evolve their relationship. If Ethan A and Sophie A made it out together, and her comment at the end about the bacon is from Sophie A, then it is making your point for you. Let the little things go. The bacon, the screw ups, that affair... compromise, give grace, support your significant other. But if it was Ethan A and Sophie B, then it's a different movie entirely. A different lesson, and different moral (or no moral??!?) etc etc. Because it's all about sabotage, selfishness, and doing what's right for yourself and no one else in the long run.

Such a fantastic movie. Can't believe we are still talking about it all these years later.

The whole point is that the couples - any pairing whatsoever- had to work together to escape the retreat. You can’t leave alone or all 4 together or 3. It HAS to be a couple. 2 people who work as a team to make it out alive and safely. These 4 did not do that. And so they are left wondering if they are really with their actual partner (A with A, etc). We know Ethan A got out. We don’t know which Sophie got out. Because the individuals didn’t keep their partners needs in mind and didn’t center their partnerships as priorities! They each thought of what they wanted, not what was best for their relationship. And when you don’t do that, you are left questioning who you are, who you are really with, and the foundation of your love.

Taylor Holmes actively engages with these theories, discussing the "moral laws" of the retreat and the possibility that Ethan-B was simply using Sophie-A to secure his own exit. Other readers, like brandio, point out the thematic irony in what each partner desires—Sophie wanting emotional engagement while Ethan simply wants a partner who makes him bacon and expects nothing of him. The thread captures a decade-long conversation where movie buffs treat the film's logic like a puzzle to be solved, often returning years later to add new insights.

This film is a masterclass in low-budget, high-concept storytelling that challenges viewers to question what they truly love about their partners. Taylor Holmes provides a comprehensive breakdown that helps fans navigate the film's final, ambiguous moments.

The film's ending is famously ambiguous, sparked by a scene involving bacon that leaves viewers questioning whether the "real" Sophie escaped or if she was replaced by her double. This brilliant and thought-provoking analysis suggests that the retreat might actually be a bizarre lab designed to force couples to confront the disparity between who they are and who they pretend to be.

It is fascinating to see how a film with such a small cast and budget can provoke such extensive debate about the nature of identity and relationships. This exploration perfectly captures why "mind-job" cinema remains so compelling to audiences who enjoy unraveling narrative puzzles.
