Just watched again after I saw it a few yrs ago and caught more things. So basically after the incident with the girls at the zoo Barry lost the light to Hedwig that allows Patricia and Dennis to come to
the light because they bribe him. I just wonder why the light was given to Hedwig after Barry to begin with. Is it because he is the only one out of the 23 that will give them the light.

First thank you for making this thread! I'm from Holland so excuse me for spelling errors.
After reading this a lot of my questions got answered but I still have 1... Why didn't Karen say Kevin's full name herself? Why did she wrote it down and then did hardly anything to stop being killed?? This really puzzeles me so I hope someone has a theory!

Not much to say, just that Patricia isn't the only female identity to "take the light" in camera; we also have Jade in the scene where they lose control.
Aside from that, in the computer we can see many female names (apart from Jade and Patricia), which are: Mary Reynolds, Norma, Polly, Rakel, Felida and Kat.
Also, if you look (and listen) closely you can see that Patricia sometimes aids Dennis in impersonating Barry (as Barry has that chliché male designer personality that is female-like). Opposite to this, when Patricia is cutting the bread in half she gets mad because the cut was crooked; thus showing how Dennis is there too.

I think the cannablism fits with the theme of virgin sacrifice. In cultures where sacrifice is/was used, the tribute/victim is killed to appease a god. I don’t know if it’s ever specified that the victim’s body or soul is then consumed by the god in question, but it seems a logical assumption.
Cannabilism itself usually occurs for one of two reasons; it’s necessary for survival or the cannibal believes there is some benefit to the practice.
If you look at Kevin’s situation, you know he was a victim and that he developed these personalities as a means of survival. Perhaps cannabilism was something he was exposed to during his abuse and this personality just adopted it; or perhaps it is symbolic of the lengths he must go to in order to survive his own trauma.
Alternatively, he may have been cannabilising the girls who weren’t “broken” because in doing so he hopes to gain their strength and purity to heal himself. Some who practice cannabilism believe that when you eat a part of another person, you gain some of their essence/qualities e.g. Jeffrey Dahmer claimed that eating his victims made him feel as though they were a part of him forever.. in some cultures warriors ate their adversaries to gain their strength and fighting ability etc.

That or the film makers just made him a cannibal for shock value since cannibalism is so taboo :P

I remember the guy "Kevin" I think (the true personality) saying that the last thing he remembers was being on a train.i bet he was on the train that Glass sabotaged. Did anyone get why the Beast ate his victims as opposed to some other method of killing? Was there a particular reason for eating them?

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2017/01/27/split-by-m-night-shyamalan-discussed-and-explained/#comment-965989">CassBass</a>.

Ooooooh. I really like that catch Cassie. Really really gloriously good insight there. Oh yeah, flowers can be seen as virginal and new, signs of spring. Which, in turn, is a normal sacrifice, an offering. In Jewish tradition, it's only the perfect things that are accepted as sacrifices. Heffers with broken legs, blemishes, etc, are rejected.

And as to the oldness of this thread... it's not old anymore. And you and I just fired off emails to everyone that is subscribed to this thread! Here we are laying our own flowers to the beast that is this thread! hahahaha.

I know this is an old comment thread, but I only just watched this movie lol.
The point about the flowers is interesting - flowers actually appeared several times throughout the film (they were in the victims’ bathroom and on their pillows when they first arrived, Patricia put them in the girls’ hair at one point etc.).
My interpretation of this is that they serve some sort of ritualistic purpose. The whole reason these girls have been abducted is so that the Horde can awaken and appease the Beast. Patricia and Dennis are offering what amounts to virgin sacrifices to a God-like being and the flowers are part of the ritual.
When Patricia puts the flowers down by the train, I think it is intended both as an offering to the Beast and as a memorial of some sort. It was mentioned that Kevin’s father “leaving” happened at this location and also that this is where the Beast lives. Obviously this is a location associated with significant trauma for Kevin. Perhaps his father died here and that’s what the flowers are for - but I think it’s also possible that the flowers signify the death of Kevin as he was before the Horde/Beast takeover. They tell us that he won’t be able to come back from this, that he’s too far gone.
Interesting analysis, by the way :)
