Brilliant thread, thank you :-). I enjoyed the film. Only thing I wonder now is what was the alternative ending someone mentioned, that was planned and never used? And I’ appaled that Netflix cuts the film in the end, before everything is showed.

I have watched this movie numerous times. The final scene when she walks out of prison, she does something with her hair and then stops and looks.
Do you know what she sees?
I have frozen this frame on the DVD and discussed it at length with friends who also love the movie. Has the Director ever mentioned what it is that we can't see?

This is one of the greatest comments in the history of cinematic apologetics. Concise to a fault. Whether I disagree or not, I have to just concede on the merits of the succinctness and clarity of this argument alone. Well played Tomi.

I think it's a little funny that your argument is straight as an arrow until the very end... the very last sentence. hahaha. Sort of undermines the whole of it!

In an earlier scene the baldie boss (Mark Strong) asks Sloane: "Weren't you ever normal, even as a child?"

Later Sloane confesses to Forde that she excels in lying because that's what she grew up with. She continues that she would love to trade that skill for normal. Then Forde says normal is overrated.

Later Forde excels at lying in the senate court (a skill Sloane has taught him in exchange for normal life).

In the end Sloane is picked up by Forde and normal life may begin.

Story doesn't tell if Forde continues lying through their marriage, though. :)

Great response. Better than my original post most probably - most probably because I wrote it one forever ago. But I’m probably right.

Thanks for the comment. And I agree, tough as nails just requires the setting of the jaw and a stern tone. But vulnerability. That’s a whole different can of mustard.

I think this movie is primarily about the corruption of power in government, which we all know exists. I am not even criticizing that it exists - I see it as a fact of life. Politics is, as Hillary Clinton said, a sausage factory and very, very messy. I loved the plot twist about Jane being an operative planted by Sloane. And the fantasy of exposing the "bad guys" is just too delicious. But as we have learned during the 1/6 hearings, it now no longer matters if we catch the bad guys admitting the truth of their lies, the true believers don't care and the rest of us are screaming with our hair on fire. The movie was very slick and fun to watch. I love political thrillers. If I have a criticism at all, it is that I am tired of the Jessica Chastain/Angelina Jolie, etc., balls to the walls females, who are beautiful, slick, cold as ice, tougher than steel who can outsmart anyone - not because that is real life, but that is how Hollywood writers write their contrived scripts (this is also true of the slick balls to the wall males). I am glad they showed her breaking down in private and Chastain was excellent in those scenes.... playing the sexy cold super hero doesn't take a lot of acting chops (I know this because my husband teaches acting and has worked professionally as both an actor and director)...showing vulnerability and being subtle, does, however - and I love watching really good actors, like Mark Strong, Sam Waterston, John Lithgow, and Jessica Chastain, when subtlety shows so much. I really liked this movie, but it was Alan Sorkin light insofar as dialogue was concerned - but truly it is worth watching and possibly watching more than once because I think the ending was worth the ride. Because, like - wouldn't we all like that ending to really matter in real life.

Just watched the movie and googled the ending and found this great thread. Read the original ending in the script. I’m glad they didn’t go with that; too schmultzy. I did think Ford would be waiting for her, though, but when she told the lawyer “make it five” I thought she wanted a long rest and doubted he’d wait that long. As for her motive for taking on the gun lobby I was waiting for a big reveal that she or a member of the family had been a victim of a mass shooting; I still think that’s the case, but she had someone else lined up for that. If they’d failed then maybe she’d have outed herself as a back up plan. Anyway, great movie.

I want to know more about why she is ice cold yet craves connection obviously she inspired loyalty enough in the escort for him to perjure himself and want to know her better. Seeds of a dicey youth are planted. Also, I got a bit distracted by the intrusion of unnecessary editorial silliness like Hahah and other personal comments ... good reviewing keeps the distance between who reviews and who/what s being reviewed. Otherwise, your unpacking details proved helpful. Keep reviewing but as a professional journalist i want to help.
