I felt like the Scrabble game and the handshake were more of an attempt on the Commander's part to connect to Offred as a human being outside the proscribed watchful presence of his wife, thereby making it emotionally more palatable and perhaps physically more satisfying for him to have sex with Offred. I also think that the power can corrupt, and as we often see with our own politicians, makes them feel untouchable. So, though the Commander is a true believer of Gilead, he is okay with bending a rule or two for his own purposes.

I also felt like Offred's self-laugh when she finally got back to her room was both relief and having been treated like a person, even to this small degree, for the first time in forever. She was invited to not follow rules, to play, to look, to touch for an hour or more. So even though it put her in danger and she was on alert as she did it, it was humanizing. I think the song at the end was a comment on that. Don't you forget about me. She was reminded of her true self.

Oh good...
I thought that that was what they were doing. Glad to hear I wasn't too off base.
