Omg I love to see you chose some Lars Von Trier films De Advocate- Antichrist, and Melancholia are phenomenal. LVT is definitely my favorite director, I just wanted to suggest to you if u haven't seen them a few other films by him, Breaking the Waves, Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 & 2 Unrated version, Dancer in The dark will break your heart even tho it is yes a musical but it's Lars so it's not JUST musicals nonstop, Dogville, omg I remember my first time w LVT was Dogville, sofa king good if u get the hidden message shown to you through, yes, illustration.

Period genre movies w thrills, kills, mystery, and forbidden romance (all listed here are all pretty current except for 1 or 2- My Cousin Rachel, In Secret, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (my favorite of this list), Lady Macbeth, Byzantium (another favorite), Farewell My Queen (French film starring Lea Seydoux n Diane Kruger- less murder/more mystery than the others), From Hell, Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley version) Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Libertine, Atonement, Gosford Park, The Duchess, Serena, Interview w the Vampire, hmm..the Beguiled original (super masculine! Not a visual stunner like Sophia Coppola's but what it lacks in pretty it makes up for in grit..n neither r exactly the same genre as the others but both are great). Tv show period genres w thrills, kills n mystery: Penny Dreadful, The Tudors seasons 1n 2 r w enchanting performances by Natalie Dormer, The Knick, Bates Motel (not genre genre but I love anything Hitchcockian) and for now I can't think off the top of my head any others I loved.. I never finished Tulip Fever but I'll give it another go-it's def genre n mysterious. Ok, Enjoy! Love, Julie B.

OK, you want dark? Like Really DARK? Here it is - Downloading Nancy. It is uncomfortable. It is powerful. One of Jason Patrick's best performances.
Next, Veronika Decides to Die. It is dark, but also uplifting. It has a beautiful piano piece in it too. Much better piece for SMG. (I bet you didn't know she did this movie last summer, well...the summer of 2009. Well, technically SPRING 2009. But you get my point)
I still want you too look at Mine Games. Pretty dark. You could gloss over it saying it is just a schlocky teenage horror, but I'm here to tell you that you'd be wrong. I would love to chat on this one.
Seven. Se7en? Come on. That was so dark I didn't watch it again for almost 15 years.
Prisoners.
Leaving Las Vegas. Good Cage is great. Great Cage is transcendent. Then there's Ghost Rider.
Bringing out the Dead. Again, see above.
Pan's Labyrinth.
Let Me In/Let the Right One In. Both versions are great.
The Swedish 10 hour version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Melancholia.
And as such, I could venture to include Anti-Christ. That is a messed up mess of darkness. It may not hold any redeeming value, but you wanted dark.
