Hey thanks Shelbs.
K, what I mean is... fan of the franchise - the world. Most people (16%) didn’t like paradox. If you ask most people today about the first one they’ll say they almost threw up, but not much else. But your point is well taken. My hope is that JJ gets more mileage out of them. But we shall see. Apparently a quiet place was discussed as a cloverfield project at one point.

rare fan? cloverfield is certified fresh, has 68% audience score, and a 7 on IMDB. i would argue there are a lot of fans.

paradox, to me, is just an average sci fi film. and that's fine because they can't all be great. sci fi is the one genre where i'll pretty much watch anything because even if the execution is bad, the ideas can be brilliant. so i'm always willing to give them a chance. so even though paradox was just okay, i'm still glad i watched it!

(by the way, look up OVERLORD. supposedly the 4th cloverfield movie and will be released later this year)

To be 100% frank - J.J. is pimping out Cloverfield to 10x random sci-fi movies that can't get made/distributed correctly. 1 off sci-fi movies don't do well at all on the average. But sequels? Way way better. So Abrams' idea? snap up a million struggling movies that are first run movies, with half decent ideas, but zero in the way of hope for a market or breakthrough. Attach said movie to Cloverfield, lightly connect it back to Cloverfield (insert a single CGI shot of Clover and call it good, which is exactly what paradox did), market it as a breakthrough new Cloverfiled movie (ie, insert Cloverfield in the name, EVEN IF IT SPOILS THE MOVIE, like it did for 10 Cloverfield Lane) and market the heck out of it. And voila, you take a vanilla sci-fi, and instantly purchased millions of fans of the franchise. And because the series is a paradox created by the Shepherd, no one will be able to say, HEY YOU CANT MAKE A CLOVERFIELD MUSICAL!!! This movie now says that you can.

I personally think its unconscionable. My 2 cents. But, I'm a rare fan of the original Cloverfield movie. J.J. is going to make way more money by pillaging it than actually creating proper Cloverfield movies. But hey, if Abrams creates a proper sequel/prequel to Cloverfield - like CLOVERFIELD 2 - I think there could be some hope? I don't know. Not sure why he would bother at this point though.

I agree that Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Cloverfield Paradox are clearly not from the same universe or timeline.

Regarding using the paradox as a framework for the movies, I'm not sure I really see the artistic or storytelling value. However, as proved by the Super Bowl ad, there is clearly some marketing value.

Glad you mentioned Coherence because Coherence cannot be mentioned enough. Although, while I was watching the potential Hamilton scenarios unfold, the movie that came to mind for me was Another Earth.

I thought Cloverfield Paradox was just okay. But it's less of a paradox movie and more of space travellers trying to science the stuff out of stuff to solve problems, where the other sub-genre should be the driving force of the story (Life or Sunshine). That focus on what makes us think about movies like Coherence or Another Earth is somehow very underwhelming, which makes it somehow more like a really sub-par Gravity or The Martian.

Regarding the timeline, for some reason I think I've read that Cloverfield Paradox takes place in 2028. I don't even know if that's important.

I think 10 Cloverfield Lane was the best of the three because it works as a stand-alone film and is a really good suspense thriller that has a sci-fi twist at the end. I don't really remember being bothered by the cinematography of the original, but I would not say I was a fan of that. Also, I guess I don't really get too into the ARG aspects either.
