This movie was so confusing! I think many of the comments helped to make a little more sense of it, but nobody explained: Who is the Blackcoat's Daughter?? A Blackcoat is a disparaging term for a clergyman - so was Kat the daughter of the priest?? Could this be why she seems upset when he won't be there for the recital?

The author of this post, in "BLACKCOAT’S DAUGHTER CHRONOLOGICALLY EXPLAINED", gets items # 1 & 2 turned around. This is because: 1) Kat has obviously been accepted/attending Bramford for some time when she gets the dream/premonition of her parent's car crash death, in the early scene where she's walking next to the Blackcoat, 2) The question of Kat's parent's whereabouts are still unknown to headmaster Brian as he speaks to Kat on the day that they were supposed to arrive, and 3) it's clear, later on in the movie, that the phone call answered by the female boarding school teacher is the bad news that Kat's parents have died. That being said, the one thing in the movie that puzzled me was the unknown events preceding the meeting of Joan, nine years later with what turns out to be Rose's parents. They pick her up outside a bus station, seemingly out of the kindness and helpfulness of the father. Did Joan know Rose's parents were going to be there, at that time? Had she been trying to track them down, and this is where she "found" them? Or was it complete coincidence, and Kat decided to take advantage of the situation, and sacrifice the rest of Rose's family while she was sitting in the car? I found this movie to be extremely disturbing, compelling, and well done, as it explored the darkest parts of the human mind and emotions while keeping the story believable, and without resorting to special effects.

I saw the film just last night with my son. It was very interesting to read your take on it. ....my pennyworth....I would compare it in esscence to Midsommar, a traumatised individual seeking a place in the world through a surrogate family relationship. It is not clear to me whether she has a premonition of her parent' death, or just a dream, what is important I think is that she believes it to be true (and just happens to be right). This sets off a search for a parent figure (it has just occured to me that the camera (she?) looks towards the audience of parents during her piano performance, was that meant to indicate her search, did she see something there, was she actaually imagining/seeing Satan sitting there in the role of parent, was he actually there and I missed it. My son actually asked whether there was something off about that shot...????) She seemed to be smiling at something in the room while talking to the headmaster, so from early on there was that presence/imagination/delusion, but she later on would refer to the headmaster allowing her to live there (with him???, in effect yes), so she seemed either confused which she wanted, Satan or Mr. Gordon, or they were one in the same thing in the end in her mind.......Another element vitla to understanding the film, IMHO, is that although there is no great indication of abuse at the school, there does seem to be a large level of social control (true of all schools, especially boarding schools???), but also religious indoctrination (understandably so, as it is Catholic school), and although I don't think we are meant to believe that God and Satan exist, we are meant to believe that the girls do, or at least Kat (Rose's telling of the women at the school having no hair and worshiping the Devil being a typical school story told toungue in cheek, but also maybe to scare...), and that Kat, in her time of need, with the father figure of the school, on the side of God, also leaving, turns to a figure, Satan, she has been made to believe really exists, so why not turn to him (the possible confusion over who she wants as a father figure possibly springing from Satan being an OPPOSITE to God, but also an essential PART of the faith)......two things I misses somehow, Joan strangling someone, and seeing herself being shot, is it possible there are two cuts of the film??? ..... and my only real criticism of the film is that I found it hard to believe that, with a different actress playing the same character, that they really where...as well as her being let out after 9 years...or did I miss that she actually escaped??? Both problems could have been solved for me by having, say, a 25 year gap between the two threads.......OK, a bit of a ramble, thanks to anyone who has stuck it out to the end, and thanks again for the review and the space to let this all out :)

So as I was reading your explanation/thoughts and opinions I fell in LOVE with your sense of humor and easy to understand breakthrough. But that's not what I mainly want to talk about. As a person who comes from a very religious family i feel the demons/devil or whatever is necessary to the plot. In many ways that aspect adds onto the viewers fear and suspense. I realize I can't speak for everyone but when I was watching I kept wondering what is this? why is this? (mainly because I just randomly picked this without knowing what it was on Netflix) But watching you know there might be something else at play due to the film's slow and simple beginning. As we progress through the film we begin to understand Kat's and Joan's storylines and their character motivations. As you pointed out Kat is by herself and lacks family. When Rose is instructed to care for Kat and denies Kat becomes upset because shes left alone. Through out the film she wishes to live with the head master yet is rightfully turned away. Finally, once this otherworldly being chooses her to do it's dirty work she does so willingly and happily. However once the thing leaves her wether because of the exorcism or it's simply done with her she's alone again. I feel as if the purpose of the film is to show Kat's struggle with being lonely as many of today's youth do. Anyways I look forward to reading you more often
