I watch a LOT of Korean "dramas" (which just actually stands for all of their genres of tv shows) and the dad investing in a business scheme that doesn't pan out or co-signing for a friend who then skips out is a common scenario. Now if this next thing is true to life or not, but again, it's common in many shows - the kids are held accountable to pay the dad's debt, complete with scary loan collectors chasing them down even if the kids are still in high school. So perhaps the dad left in this movie (I haven't watched it yet) to keep the gangster collectors away from the daughter as in these scenarios, the kids have no future as it takes forever to repay the debt. (Kind of like student loans in the USA ;) only with knee breakers)
