I could talk about this movie all day long. Fantastic theory... I totally love it. So she died? Interesting. But I really loved your perspective post-covid. Which, is gloriously true. Right? Like, this is our story now. We are churning out knowledge, and forgetting it faster than we can create it. So good.

Firstly.
I agree, most of what you pointed out, all 4 theories and more, and also love movies people hate.
I just saw it for the 1st time, March 2024.
It was made 2016.
Before Caronavirus.
Now hasn't that just made us all forget, more than we ever knew. Lol.
L I T E R A L L Y.
It's obviously a movie you need to eatch several times. So many clues kept being dropped, which nerd to be assessed.( all before 'Easter Eggs' and 'Icebergs'). Lol×2.
I wan't to throw another theory on the Fire. The most obviious , methinks.
This was a post F I Format,
'Son of'"L O S T".
 LOL×3.!

Therefote, bthey Died from the Deadly Toxic Gas,
I mean seriously, whats a thin grey single sheet going to do, when the air is so thick whith the Toxic Gas, that they could hardly see the trees(or the Forest).
The Girl, was already pretty much DEAD, when he layed her down, and speny precious time finding this sheet, and laying next to her.
They were on the after-life, and Poolman, was the Devil.
"Don't TRUST HIM", says Man.
The Dance scene reminds me of Tim Curry, playing the Devil in 'LEGEND', wrre he presents the Princess Mia Sara, with a Black Gown (Black Dress)
And transforms her with makeup and Jewelry, in Beauty and the Beast, Analogy.
Thats my Theory at first glance, but I will watch it again, and watch the clues closely.
But bottom line, I was entranced and suspended in the juxtaposition of complexity presented with such Simplicity.

Yet, like Jenni, the previous comment tonthis, I just watched this, and I almost want to watch it again, all the CLUES????

...But its 5am in Australia, and I have ADHD.
So I'd beyter sleep first, otherwise I'll be going for 48hrs, and the Movie will become a Trauma.
Maybe, it alteady is.
Forget Post Apocalyptical!!!
Post Covid, is Dystopia.

This is such a great movie; I’m surprised that I just now found it today. It reminded me of the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, by Harlan Ellison. In the short story, the last surviving humans are being kept alive by a sentient computer, and that thought occurred to me early in the movie. The possibilities are so fascinating, and I got many ideas along the way (and I’m glad to have also found this page!), but that one resonated with me so well. I spent some of my time imagining that AI wanted to provide this couple with hope without simply giving them their beach goal, while learning to toy with their feelings. If the simulation is still learning how to learn to create more complex things for the humans, the Man In The Pool is learning to be. He also seems to already be, so he and everything else in this movie sparks so much creative thinking. I absolutely loved it, and I’m considering watching it again already, even though I just finished about a half hour ago. It’s also immensely impressive to learn that this was the director’s first! It’s so polished and professional, he’s such an immensely talented writer and director.

Jana has it exactly right. The Towers are Eden.

Also the "alien" language is just gibberish because they don't know how to read. (We do, so we can figure it out).

The story is basic with a lot thrown in to confuse and seem deeper than it is. If the actors don't even know what's going on, that's not a good sign.

I was reading this article before & while watching the movie. It’s not a movie that I could watch with my husband; partially since it takes pulling teeth to get him to actually watch a movie. “I like episodes since there aren’t any surprises. You know how my ADHD is, Hon.”
“I like movies or new episodes so the evening isn’t stagnant; but let’s get comfortable and relax & just turn whatever on.”
I’ve told my husband that within the last year he “doesn’t see me”. As in his actions or constant purchases or ‘lifestyle’ rants/actions that I’ve felt that he really didn’t care about or notice my own words or look on my face when he paces around or pauses the TV so he can be heard for another 15min.
This movie hit home being in a relationship & keeping things hidden. I’m always willing to talk; too bad he’s such a wonderful and nice person, yet has this extremely selfish aspect of himself.

this isn't a well-thought out theory, but what if only 1 of the 3 people are real? I'd say it would have to be the pool man. he's catatonic. he's the last one left, maybe after destroying everyone else personally. creating his towers in the middle of nowhere. and telling himself stories. which ties into the morality tale about the distance between the couple. if so, what does it say that Woman casts off pool man and Man and Woman leave? i think it would be like he's sending his characters out into a barren world he knows never ends. pool man has sinister vibes.
I really liked your article on this movie, I tend to like movies other people hate too and We've Forgotten was very interesting. i think it's interesting how they have no names. you call them Man and Woman and that has the effect of making it very... universal. like a story about something very large.

The movie on a surface looks like post-apocalyptical world story of survival. The forested world of toxic water, suffocating air and scarce resources through which a couple trying to pass by unknown path to imaginative dream of happy life. They wake up to discover nearby two colossal concrete towers, completely devoid of people, and not but with unlimited leftovers of previous inhabitants.

The couple spends a time contemplating if that's their dream home, as it doesn't look like what either of them imagined. The man lazily tries to find the answers to what happened to other people and why the building was abandoned, though quickly gives up and starts his own routine on making new stories. The woman quite sure that's not the dream they came for here, but through adopting new things and routines, changes her direction in search for happiness to her internal routines and new hobbies.

Both getting more and more distant and dissatisfied with each other. Only when the events go awry after the man in the pool reactivates and weird things happen (as he suddenly appears having ability to orchestrate them as puppets - that questions who were the robots), only that motivates them to reunite and leave the strange site to a further path to their imaginative dreams. That's what on a surface.

But on another plan, there is a huge symbolism. Buildings are like the modern society. Full of amenities, cultural artifacts, social constructs working on a subtle level, remnants of the past and mold. And highly impersonal, so in the movie there was not even a need for more people. The aspiration when a couple tried to make decision about moving to another room is akin to all those families aspiring to move from their starter home to a new one. The conflicts, the lies and frustration with each other is all what we are passing through in our lives. And massive feeling of loneliness even though living in the midst of social life, that is only viewed as reflections in mirrors (TV, internet, social networks, movies are serving only as illusion mirrors). We read papers every day, but barely understand each other.

The man and the woman try to manipulate others (represented by a catatonic/robotic guy) to achieve their diffused goals (maybe even with noble intentions), but then fall into reflexing their feelings to appearing to be listening, but mostly very indifferent public. And shortly, as they fall into a trap of social etiquette, they turn to be actually manipulated and complacent members of the society they thought they could influence. This dance becomes so powerful, that the woman is awaken with realization of her role there, and she reunites with her wounded by breaking social mirrors man, as they decide to exit the vicious cycle and go for their dreams outside the limits of the society. The last piece is maybe the only thing that can be considered paranormal, as most of us end up dying and disappearing in the building, and only white noise remains recorded. But the couple found a strength to be united even despite their differences, as their common interest and ultimate motivation was outside of the walls.
