This movie changed me. I have suffered mental illness since I was a teenager and I knew before watching it that it would be excellent. People need to see this movie to know how dark one person can view life and cast that darkness over their family. Toni Collette has always been a favorite of mine and I can't imagine anyone but her playing the role of Annie. Religious, spiritual and demonic possession aside this movie made me happy in a way that people finally understanding something they never knew makes me happy. It was not what I consider horror because I don't think that the scares were horror induced. It's scary because mental illness is real and Ari Aster let's us know. With movies and television now romanticising mental illness Hereditary shows us what happens when you don't take care of your mental health. The movie shows us that we are not exempt from the sins of our parents (not too sure if it was intended or not but that's what I got.)

So, I watched this film late last night and made a mental note to see if you wrote about it here today. The end lost it for me with this movie. It was confusing and a bit out there especially switching from a very unsettling movie about family tragedy and mental illness to demons and whatnot. I will forever have nightmares about that car accident, though. I also remember in the beginning of the film when Annie is speaking at the funeral of her mother she mentions how there are so many people there she doesn’t know. Big foreshadowing there. I also lost some empathy for Annie when she explained how she almost set the kids on fire and then had the dream where she told Peter she tried to kill him in the womb. I think they should have just left this film about serious mental illness without the demon aspect but that’s just me. And this is your blog and it’s your right to discuss your own religious views. I don’t get why the other commenter cares!

I'm kind of disappointed in your religious views. I love talking theories, that's why I gravitated towards your site. Put your religion aside. I don't see why it Needed to be mentioned. It doesn't help explain the movie.
