What part of them living together makes you think it’s a “budding relationship”? Most people don’t move in with people they just started connecting with and there’s no law that you have to change your last name when you marry. Seems like they have been together for a while. Might be just a nitpick, but that took me out of the article.

The grey gunk in the jar is adrenochrome the stuff from the adrenal gland in the brain . This is very controversial stuff , Phil Schneider said aliens get off on it like cocaine and the elite use it as it lee’s them young , I won’t go into how it’s got but if you google it will tell you also why was Mandy one eye bigger than the other or is it symbolism the one eye thing ,,,, and that scar on her face,,,,she looked like a water goddess coming out the water any ideas people.also at the end where he kills jeramiah that bleeding crushed skull is what he had a vision of sort of precognition he saw this when he took the adrenochrome in the jar the green brain stuff .

I have seen this movie countless times and always find more to ponder. Mandy seeing the stillborn deer in the forest and the unused swingset in the back yard makes me think Red and Mandy lost a child at one time and have never recovered from it. Did anyone else see that?

A reference to Revelation 6:8. The “pale horse” and its rider or knight whose name was Death. Cults like to reference apocalyptic literature. Basically he was poetically saying “with this knife we have received from that ugly demonic creature a few scenes back we are going to kill your girlfriend.”

*I know this comment is about two years late to the conversation but I’m current watching the movie and just happened to stumble upon your article about it.

As a psychologist *and* a Christian pastor, I definitely approach this movie from all sorts of psychological and spiritual angles. Ultimately, I think the film represents a Jungian alchemical process of integration triggered by grief.

I think Mandy, Red, Jeremiah, and all the rest are the same person. Mandy either represents the feminine Sophia (“wisdom” – personified as the ideal woman in the biblical book of Proverbs) or perhaps Irene (“peace” – or “wholeness” derived from the Hebrew concept of “shalom” within Judeo-Christian thought) which is lost when attacked by the self-conscious, grasping male ego (Jeremiah).

Red, realizing and grieving this loss of inner peace and contention, sets out to reclaim it again by integrating the Jungian archetypal parts of his psyche through the alchemical process described in the old alchemical acronym “VITRIOL” which is Latin for “Visita Interiora Terræ Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem” which means “Visit the Interior of the Earth and [there] Rectifying/Purifying find the Hidden Stone.”

If you notice, as his rampage continues, he wanders until finding an otherworldly guide (the Chemist) and then passes through a triangle shaped temple (representing the worship of the male ego) to enter “the interior of the earth” represented by the hole at the pulpit in the back of the temple that he must lower himself into.

This passage into the deeper portions of his psyche allows him to confront these demons/cult members/Jungian archetypes head-on and integrate them and so be at peace by “killing” them, until he finally kills his fragile male ego (Jeremiah) in a moment of orgasmic ecstacy.

Then as he leaves, the triangle-shaped temple representing worship of the male ego is burned. Red is fully integrated and reunited with his Sophia-Irene (Mandy), symbolized by the both of them wearing the same jersy, and he is able to transcend spiritually to worlds only once dreamed of by the Mandy portion of his psyche.

Or, you know, maybe it’s just about the sweet, sweet feeling of reveeeeeenge! What the heck do I know?
