Hi and thanks for your review. I binge-watched the series today and loved it...totally hit the spot. Typically I don't care for neat, "tied-up" stories; however, Maniac was
brilliant at staying true to its core motif (connections/relationships), be it the one with our "self" and "true" identity, or with others (familial, platonic or romantic), and the outside world (through computers and AI, parallel universes, other storylines, etc.).

The more I reflect, the more I'm marveled at its success in being wickedly funny and dark, but also relatable and authentic--even in its "weirdness"-- which was genuinely zany and not contrived given its outlandishness. (A feat in itself.)

I wanted to weigh in on a few things. @Greg, I tried responding to your comment about the ending but couldn't, so, here's to that ending: it's real, and it's cautiously optimistic. I like the suggestion that Annie and Owen are leaving the past behind them, heading out to explore the proverbial and unchartered "west" (Salt Lake). And it's quite nicely packaged by the endearing bow that is the last scene with the dog and the hawk, one that I would ordinarily dismiss. Literally and figuratively, the hawk represents Owen and the dog is Annie. (As a kid, Owen rescues a hawk hoping to fix its wing and set it free; instead, the hawk eats his brother Jed's hamster, and an enraged Jed retaliates by killing it, clearly a huge source of pain for Owen.) The hawk is manifested in other scenes as Owen's ability to fly on his own. Ultimately,
it represents his triumph in moving beyond the pain caused by his family. Likewise, the dog is Ellie's--Groucho--who Annie lost (presumably years prior) but continues to look for up until the start of the drug trial. Once a stagnant reminder of loss, Groucho is a symbol of connection to her sister, and Annie's new ability to finally live her own life.

Oh! Did anyone else connect the term "The McMurphys" as a refernece to poor
Randle McMurphy, the brash anti-hero slated for an inexorable fate in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest?"

Hey there Greg,
Recently I did a deep dive on the Haunting of Hill House - and in that conversation I said that I don’t think the creators added a deeper level, but I said I totally believe it was there. (Don’t want to say too much here so that I don’t spoil it here for you if you haven’t watched it.)

But with the show Maniac, though I always want a deeper level, I didn’t see it. But don’t get me wrong!!! The one major flaw here is that this deeper dive isn’t really there. And it would have been easy to add too. A minor glitch. A hiccup of some sort. But instead, they leaned on a happy ending with the two of them going on this trip together.

But if you wanted a thread to pull on in this direction, it’s already there. Remember that every fantasy, simulation, included starting over, a radical reenvisioning of their lives to start a new (which is a cry for forgiveness and a cry for renewal, but I digress) and that is what their trip together is. It’s just one more fantasy. They aren’t even romantically inclined. As far as we know. They are going on a buddy road trip? Eh? To a place a dead sister was going? Why? Makes zero sense when you think about it.

So yeah, there is a lot of room for us to believe they are still inside the simulation at the end of the day. And if I had my druthers, that would be the direction I would go with this show. Maybe I should add that as an option at the end. Hrmmm.

Thanks for the comment Greg.

It's funny that you wanted that one level deeper, because I came here wondering if you thought perhaps there was one. The end seemed to be getting tied up with a nice bow, but then a hawk was riding a robotic pooper-scooper down the road, and I (rather enjoying the happy ending) wondered if they were still in the simulation. Everything seemed to be based in the real world except the hawk... but what if much of what we were shown to have occurred in the lab, was actually part of GERTA's simulation. Since Owen had turned into a hawk earlier, I just had to wonder. I don't think that's the case but thought I should share with you, since I know you tend to pull on those kinds of threads.

So, I am new to commenting here but I reference your blog a lot for recommendations. I even have a watch list I’m working on based on films you reviewed. Anyway, I wasn’t going to watch this show because so many people I know hated it but then I decided to binge it anyway and I loved it. I loved Annie for caring about Owen and wanting to be there for him despite knowing the big issues he’s had in the past. As I mentioned, this was a great recap with the exception of the mess up about Olivia in the diner.

I was going to mention this as well. All in all a good recap but you messed up a bit on the diner part. He asked Olivia to go away with him and after they wound up with 7 kids in a tiny apartment he jumped and said he didn’t belong there which was a pretty important point because he was trying to get back to Annie.

Thank you for this most insightful breakdown. It really clarified a lot of this series. I always appreciate your thorough explanations which answer questions and tie up loose ends for me. Keep on truckin'!

Hey Marie,
Yes, you are correct... his core trauma happened well before the wedding (I thought it was an engagement party, or maybe they jumped?), and actually I believe it happened before the spy. But that is irrelevant to the story at hand. But yes, I totally glazed over the "fake" relationship that wigged him out. Olivia definitely threw me. Thanks for clarifying.

First of all, thanks for doing a review! I personally really liked the show, Jonah Hill and Emma Stone really did a great job here. I also thought they would tie Annies and Owens characters together in some deeper level but I'm fine with it all being coincidence. I recommended Maniac to a friend who's now also going to watch it so that we can talk about it which is obviously a lot more fun than explain the plot and characters by oneself. One thing I got to add: Owens core trauma isn't attempted suicide at his brothers wedding, that is a lie he tells Robert when he got asked about his A-Pill experience (which he at this point hasn't taken) what he really experienced is what he told Annie, his first BLIP, he believes a girl he liked, Olivia, is a set up spy sent by his family, he yells at her and ruins their relationship like that. So later in the Arb. Reality being the Mafia guy he sees Olivia not Annie to studie.
