My interpretation of the ending: having finally faced, understood, and accepted the reality of his mental illness together and now knowing how to spot it, his family is now recognizing he's about to have an episode/is having an episode - but the scene is shown from his perspective, not theirs. Thus from his viewpoint, that translates as them finally seeing the storm he sees, and acknowledging it.

Just see the beginning his wife ask that they need to do deposit for the beach condo and he responded just write the check babe. So they had booked the beach condo. So the end is nothing but curtis was right and was forseeing future

Mental illnesses can be terrifying; and they have a tendency to make the victims retreat and isolate. Then, they tell us to "act out" in a way to attempt to ease the suffering. There is no logic to the "acting out". Mental illness tells us that we are not ill. This movie suggests to me that a major cure is found in "asking for help", and "using the help that is available". Including medication and the warmth of others. Note that a trusted qualified psychiatrist is involved in the treatment. And his family is working together. "And just maybe he can survive this illness". Teamwork.

The end was real. You can see the sea reseeding and the tsunami coming. He was vindicated. A little to late but vindicated. They all die. Go back and watch the footage of the Japan tsunami in March 11 2011. I watched it over and over again. Add to that the tornadoes and huge storm front.
If it was a dream we would have been told that by the author like all the other dreams he has to wake up for it to be a dream. In the movie he never woke up.

OK I rewind the movie back in the wife is not wearing the same outfit. I can’t edit my previous comment.

Still, as many pointed out the daughter saw the storm at the end first. She also saw the birds. Therefore in my opinion there are only two options to the end of this movie

1) He was having premonitions and nobody would believe him and it was all real. If anybody’s ever been gaslighted it sucks when everybody makes you feel crazy for being aware, and because many people don’t believe in signs from the universe or premonitions it would give him anxiety to be alone in it. Even if it was all real them if he is still about anxiety. In this version they do not make it back alive, but hey at least he gets validation.

2) he has paranoid schizophrenia like his mother did and the end is a dream. This is actually the happier version, because as others have stated his family has come together to support him and he is no longer isolated in his experience.

First I’d like to point out that Sam (his wife) has the exact outfit on as she does in the dream (vision) where she is staring at the knife and is wanting to stab him. Also we see that she gets the rain on her hand, which is likely what causes people to turn into violent zombies.

I agree that if they had stayed home they would’ve been safe, but they saved quite a bit of money to take the vacation which implies that Myrtle Beach is not close to their home. I really like a happy ending and I really wanted everybody to see that he was right after all. I even wanted a scene where they were trying to get into a shelter wishing they had one of their own, but I have a feeling they don’t make it back.

I also want to say that I believe the universe gives us lots of signs and that this movie isn’t a far-fetched fictional tale. My house burned down in a huge forest fire and for the an entire week before I dreamed that my house was burning down. In the dreams I had only a moment to grab the most important things. My family made it out of our home with her cats, but just barely. We lived miles of the dirt road in the middle of nowhere, we were lucky. I was prepared.

I also dreamed for about a week that my mother died. She was very young and not sick, but it was that real type of dream again. We had a conversation about end of life wishes, just in case. the next week she did. It’s the universe is giving you signs LISTEN!

It's a dream at the end. He and his family are on the same page. The storm is his worsening mental illness. The proof is that they could never afford to go on vacation after he lost his job.

This comment is a reply to a user named Beth that left a comment above.

You basically said it could have had a happy ending because they were only 20 minutes away from home and the storm shelter. Sorry, but they wouldn't have made it home before storm and tsunami reached them. They lived in Ohio and Myrtle Beach is in South Carolina. So I don't think they could have driven back to Ohio before the storm reached them.

In your synopsis you said they went to Florida which is incorrect. They went to Myrtle Beach.
