The main character is a veteran soldier but is also the suicidal by starvation and the child molester (Jackie is a little girl but he imagines her as a woman in the future).]]></description>

It could be a sort of heaven moment for the dying Jack, which was not actually fulfilled in the future, since Jack could not change anything.
This would validate the entire rest of the story in the time travel sense.
The only alternative to this is bad writing.]]></description>
