So interesting! Very much was engaged by the film. The major hole in the plot for me was that apparently no full-scale hunts for all the mysterious disappearances in that neck-of-the-woods ever takes place. You'd have to think any number of people were offed by Adam over many decades. It'd be like The Bermuda Triangle of Appalachia! Wouldn't that bring the authorities around sooner or later? A local Deputy Sheriff at least? A tracking dog? The FBI? A helicopter search? Tax collectors? No place in the modern US is so isolated as to never draw attention if people "vanish" near it repeatedly. And with the Appalachian trail and a town both relatively close by it just doesn't make sense. It'd be one thing, and still a stretch if the couple just laid low and minded their affairs and magic water, but the fact of people going missing in the vicinity changes the equation.

The input here on the article was interesting. I also wondered about the vehicle and the reading of the journal after bing there for so many years No one mentioned the two stillbirths, and I don't understand if that is somehow significant to the plot, and maybe I didn't understand it. Although too much suspense in a movie makes me nervous, Still had just the right amount of suspense as to what Adam might be capable of doing at any given time, so his eventual gruding acceptance of the girl hiker was intriguing - alhough he did eventually shoot her out of anger with Ella! I also felt, at the end, that Ella and Adam simply became tired of fighting to live and decided to end it, without any pangs of consceience.

I know why I thought what I thought now, as I just went back and rewatched some scenes. Abby tells Adam that the girl was sent there for him so that she, Abby, could leave. I guess she meant so she could go die? Did they know that though? I wish they had never ever done that scene with the journal, etc. because that is the thing that puts a huge wrench right in the middle of the premise of the movie.

I don't understand why they couldn't still have a life. I mean they obviously had to go into town regularly to sell the moonshine and also to buy food, etc. Why couldn't they just take a jug of water with them and live a fairly normal life with acquaintances at least?

Also it doesn't make sense because it seems that they didn't even KNOW that they couldn't leave the property/live without it until the day she went to the pub and he read it in the journal. So again, why didn't they try to have a somewhat normal life all those years, as long as they never got too close to anyone or brought them back to their property, it works seem that they could have gone to other towns and gone to a bar every now and then, or to play bingo or whatever folks do in them there parts. I can understand why they couldn't continue to go to the same town, as the locals would notice that these two never age.

What really bothered me most, and may be the thing that I find the most unforgivable in this film is that supposedly they'd been there for who knows how long, but they never bothered to read the journal that was right in a dresser drawer until 100 or so years into it??? (coincidentally at that exact time). I mean the sheer boredom alone, you would have gone through every nook and cranny and read anything and everything there. Speaking of which... why no books or instruments or knitting or any sort of entertainment for themselves. Why are they living in such lonesome misery? Lol

Anyway, despite all of that, I really did enjoy this movie, but had I not come here I wouldn't have quite understood it correctly. I was thinking that maybe if they got someone else to take their place (like give a soul/take a soul) that maybe they could leave. That's why I came searching for clarity and found this cool blog. Now I'm going to poke around check out your other recommendations.

I believe the journal was most likely filled with the Rules,Beneifts, & Consequences of drinking the elixir & the experiences the previous married couple experienced. I also believe that the couple may have tried to leave the property & discovered they’d quite literally age to death & decided they were finally ready to be at peace if they could not enjoy the gift of being young & immortal. I mean it makes sense because some people would be okay with living their lives in one place forever & ever but that’s not everyone (hence Thomas & Mary’s suicide). & I believe she only killed the one male as to leave the one she liked alive, to keep around as her partner. I felt really bad for the guys in the beginning because they weren’t even in search for the elixir as they knew nothing of it & Adam killed them (understandable but still sad). I also understand why anyone who found such a seemingly lucid, unsurreal & unnatural gift, wouldn’t show to the public (government authorities) all they’d do is claim the it as federal property, restrict people from the Appalachian trails to prevent from finding the cave, & like they always do…try to make a profit by using this elixir or making it into a type of “cure” so to speak for a tremendous amount of injuries, diseases, sickness, plague etc etc & they’d be selfish & keep it to themselves (which is what Ella Adam & lily do) but if the government gets ahold of it then NO ONE will have it.

1.What did Adam read in the journal that made him go after his wife?

2. In the beginning you see the wife with the bottle then the two hikers, husband comes and takes them. Are they the same guys that get shot by the cancer girl?

I'm confused bcuz you see them in the end when she wakes up and reads the note.
