Are you kidding? ''Who is Claire''? She is Ira, the leader of the cult. ''Why Ansel'' - because she wanted to brainwash aka ''program'' the one who used to deprogram people, to check and use his own methods' against him. Now, powered with his knowledge she will be able to brainwash even more people. The real question is why write a review without actually understanding or even paying attention to the movie??? You don't need to ''seek out the writer'', you only need to pay attention to the movie, it's all there...

I’m not sure about the revenge theory. At the end when Claire has given her “parents” the pill, tland thanks them for everything, the “mother” says something along the lines of “his knowledge will help you spread your message even more” – I think Ansel was chosen because at one time he was genuinely very good at what he did, and as a opponent of cults, if he’s joined one, maybe it’s to give the impression it’s real deal and because he is also a good ‘programmer’

And as for Fargo – gracious! A-bomb much?!? Ok. You talked me into it. I have a list of tv shows that I watch with a buddy during lunch. We are finishing up Halt and Catch Fire currently. And previously we watched Counterpart. So, I’ll add that to the list right after Halt. Thanks for the “gentle” recommendation.

Oh, side note, if you disdained antiviral, don’t watch A Cure For Wellness. Definitely not going to be your thing.

Oh, final side note. If Faults worked for you, you probably will like Tape. Darker, but same setup/hotel room talky with Ethan Hawk. Really really good. And no one knows about it.

Loved the movie. I have been watching almost exclusively movies from your list for a couple weeks. I am rarely disappointed. Except for Antiviral..EW…But I am really just leaving this comment to say one thing..DID YOU SERIOUSLY SAY YOU HAVEN’T SEEN FARGO????? For someone who like these kind of layered wtf is going on kind of genre…Fargo is amazing! First season especially. If you only watch one season watch the first one with Billy Bob Thornton in it. He plays one of my favorite tv characters ever. Including Walter White. That’s saying something. I was glued to my TV screen the whole first season. So please please watch it for me..K? Okay as for this movie. Freaking awesome I have seen this actress in all mentioned movies and shows she is great. Thanks for another solid review and recommendation!

Yes, what dekev is saying here. The guys her parents apparently killed were the ones that originally kidnapped her. Totally 100%.

As for the revenge theory, yes, totally DeKev. I am not sure why I didn’t mention this tid-bit, seeing as though it is so key to the understanding of the entire movie. But then what would we have to talk about here?!? But she is on a warpath, on a purpose.

@Alessandro, I think you have the two sets of people mixed up. You were referring to Ansel’s manager/moneylender boss and his messenger goon, while Claire was referring to the white dude who was part of the 2-men gang that helped Ansel kidnap Claire. It was this white guy who went a bit overboard (he slapped Claire for putting up a fight and was later rebuked by Ansel for that, if I remember correctly), compared to the black guy, the one who had guard duty on the first night at the motel, the same one who acted properly throughout. IMHO, the fact that Claire had made sure the white dude was “taken care of” is just the movie’s way of emphasizing the point that she is definitely no saint herself, and that she has the means to dish out her own brand of justice. Incidentally, it also lends credence to Taylor’s revenge theory, come to think of it.

What about the scene, at the end, when she asks her “parents” if they had take care of the men, and her mother asks, “just to be sure”, if it was the white guy, not the black one… And that was because he had hit her. Something like that.. I don’t remember exactly. But I believe that this the understanding of this can lead to the understanding of the movie and what was really going on.
When the “white guy” had hit Claire?
I only remember of him hitting Ansel, right? Or not?

Interesting take on Claire’s motive, Taylor. I was of the opinion that Claire had chosen Ansel simply because the latter was deemed to be able to augment the former’s psychic brainwashing powers. But this would mean that Ansel must have been real adept at his deprogramming methods, and not just a charlatan preying on the vulnerable, well, at least from before his fall from grace. However, as you mentioned, there was little evidence of his “abilities” on show. In fact, the more we see of him, the less I’m convinced that he’s good at anything at all, other than messing things up for himself and everyone around him. So yeah, your revenge motive is all too plausible, after all, what do we really know of Claire, other than what we learned from totally unreliable sources that are her “mother” and “father”?

What I like best about this movie though, apart from the right-hook twist (a plot device that I think all movies should strive to include if possible, cough, cough), is the gradual and inexorable shift in tone from light-hearted dramedy to something far darker and creepier than I would have thought possible at the outset.
