Yes, an actual video store a la Clerks. It's definitely a generational divide much like when my son went into an old drawer and found an old camera of mine, turned it on and "took" a bunch of pictures and then handed it to me asking me to upload them and I told him there were no pics as there was no film in the camera and his reply, of course-"what's film?" Anyway, I love that Mackenzie is choosing these great roles even though she gets parts in blockbusters too. It shows me what kind of actress she really wants to be. I wonder if also that a lot of people don't watch this film due to the title and perhaps thinking it is some kind of chick flick when it's so much more than that! I have to admit I almost didn't watch it even though it was categorized with the horror films but then when you do watch it you realize what that title really means. It's genius! I will of course check out the suggestions!

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2019/02/17/always-shine-is-your-next-closed-box-favorite/#comment-984195">Lisa</a>.

Yeah, it was really great - thanks for the recommendation. I'm definitely going to mail you a year's free subscription to Taylorholmes.com. Bet you are giddy with all the THiNC. you'll be able to have free access to! hahaha.

I love scripts within movies. Plays within movies. Definitely a huge reason I loved Hamlet. (Literally just finished watching The Thirteenth Floor, and if you haven't watched that, check it out. Really clever. Basically Nolan ripped off Daniel Galouye's Simulacron-3 and the Thirteenth Floor when he did Inception.

Yeah, the Anna/Beth Evisceration scene is the single best scene in the movie. Loved that little gesture at the end. Did she kiss her forehead? Sort of a conciliatory, 'didn't mean that thing I just did' sort of move. When we knew for a fact that she did. So good. I will watch Halt. Mackenzie is such a different, and wild eyed actress... so much potential. Sort of reminds me of (for different reasons) Aubrey Plaza.

Hahaha you worked in a video store too? I think that sentence, "I worked in a video store" will be a shibboleth differentiating us like a self defining generational gap. Too funny. Anyway, totally loved that movie. Thanks again for sending it to us. Wish all the recommendations were half that good.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it and I had the same thoughts while watching it. I was even going to mention how the dialogue made me think of a The Clouds of Sils Maria but I wanted to see if you would get that jist as well. That one scene where they were rehearsing lines and Anna just eviscerates Beth is just about the most non violent beatings I’ve ever seen done in a movie. Mackenzie has a long full career ahead of her. And what’s funnier? I worked in a video store after high school in the early 90s and became infatuated with the films that were just off the beaten path a bit. You should totally binge Halt and Catch Fire.
