I watched this movie tonight and for it being a lower budget film, it did its job in making the brain go into 2nd gear, as seen by all the previous comments.

Many people have had issues and others have answered them, but I have two nagging issues. First, where is the cowboy? Why wasn't he saved as well? Is it because he isn't part of the friends and family plan? He should have been saved, since he was in the same area as the main characters. The other issue is that those in the deepest depths, and thickness of water/time, are still trapped and have actually only been there for a short period of time inside while hundreds/thousands of years have passed outside. Given this, how would anyone know that there was a fountain of youth? Anyone finding it would be trapped in time. No one would ever know about it without being trapped. Therefore, no one would search for it, because they wouldn't know about it. For me, this is the flaw, unless there is an answer that could be in a follow-up film, or even a tv series.

Kudos on the movie, since it really made us all think. In that regards, it reminded me of a low-budget time travel movie, Primer. I love movies that put the brain to work.

Something I noticed that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Inside the cave time gets slower the deeper you go. Each room gets slower and slower. That's why in the beginning Jackie complained that she waited for "what felt like forever" for the others to go investigate the mysterious noises, and why they were able to stay so far ahead of the spaceman when they were running from him, also why once Furby fell in he was unconscious for so long before being killed by the cavemen.
Also, a few people have it mixed up, time on the surface is moving faster and in the cave, it's slowed down. A few places I've seen it estimated to about 4 seconds inside the cave = 1 year outside. And the events of the movie take place over about 5,400 years on the surface and just 3ish hours underground.
I think the ending was way too rushed, and I was frustrated at the lack of exposition. All of a sudden the credits were rolling and I was left feeling hungry still for some sort of explanation about how the aliens/future humans knew where they were, how the water worked, and how to rescue them. I just wish we could have gotten a little more info about WHY the events of the movie took place, what the significance of the cave was, and what happened to humanity in all that time!

This movie really isn't difficult to understand. The reviewer on this site -- and quite a few people posting here -- simply did not pay attention.

The kids go into a cave and pass the first "moisture barrier," indicating they have penetrated a zone where time moves much slower than on the surface. For every few seconds that pass in that section of the cave, an entire season passes on the surface.

Further into the cave there is a second moisture barrier, beyond which time passes even more slowly, so slow that movement inside is imperceptible to observers looking in.

This is why we see Spanish conquistadors engaged in an epic battle with indigenous tribesmen within that innermost chamber: From their point of view time is moving normally, but from the outside they appear frozen. This is the exact same effect Hopper witnesses when he sees the cowboy from outside the cave beyond the first moisture barrier.

Now, the reason the natives and conquistadors are inside the cave in the first place is because it literally contains the fountain of youth. We see the fountain quite clearly as Taylor looks into the innermost chamber where time is at a virtual standstill.

The movie also tells us precisely what we're seeing because, earlier on, Furby reads Hopper's notes which say the Spanish monarch sent several expeditions to retrieve a vial of water from the Fountain of Youth, but none have returned. They didn't return because they went into the innermost chamber, where time is almost at a standstill. They are still alive, still fighting the natives to reach the fountain and retrieve a vial of water.

In addition, with this new knowledge the kids figure out that the cave system, with its time-shifted zones, is essentially one big protective mechanism for the Fountain of Youth itself, ensuring that it cannot be exploited.

In the meantime, runoff from the Fountain of Youth flows out to a small pool in beyond the first moisture barrier. This is the pool where Taylor and Furby are resurrected, and where Jackie is healed.

When the Spaceman comes into the cave and the kids ask him what year it is and how much time has passed, he punches a command on his wrist devices that SCANS THEIR FACES, searches a database, and finds information about them. Then it shows them news reports about their disappearance, as well as reports about the giant ark in orbit where humans have fled after destroying the Earth's atmosphere.

That's when the kids have their worst fears confirmed, that hundreds of years have passed on the surface while they have been trapped in the cave.

And yes, the kids most certainly do react to this news with dismay. Veeves cries, Jackie is shocked, and Cara tries to comfort Veeves as they both realize their parents are long dead, never knowing the fate of their children.

For the remaining few hours they are stuck in the cave, THOUSANDS of years pass outside: So much time that humans have evolved into a semi-aquatic, spacefaring species that can hop between planets in seconds.

These evolved humans with their advanced tech are able to rescue the kids and Hopper's family by sending tentacle-like machines that reach into the time-shifted cage and pull them out. That solves the problem of rescuers getting stuck inside: No one has to physically go inside to rescue them, they simply deploy machines to yank them out.

So the Fountain of Youth itself does heal humans, and it can bring people back to life, but it is separate from the time-shifted zones. The reason there are moisture "walls" separating the zones are 1) For narrative purposes to clearly delineate the zones so we (the audience) understand where they begin, and 2) Because to an outside observer, everything within the slowtime zones is condensed. Even the air is condensed.

Finally, when the characters are all reunited aboard the future human starship, they see a silver lining in that at least they still have each other. Jackie also says "We're kind of a big deal around here," meaning these future humans are fascinated by them. (And yes, they would be: The kids and the Hoppers are living examples of the future humans' evolutionary record, the same way a Neanderthal would be if we found one encased in ice and we were able to resurrect him/her.

Okay, lotta negative criticism here. I think the concept of the time layers was fascinating. Darlie, you deserve THREE thumbs up for that analysis!!! that was awesome! I dig it. I enjoyed the movie, but it really wasn't that bad for a B movie I think they did a fine job overall. And I totally agree with whoever commented that this discussion thread is like the slowed time on the cave (BTW-dream levels comment!! loved the 'Inception'reference!!!:-) awesome!!) cuz now it's Jan. 2021 and I just saw the movie for the first time last night, yet I see the first of the comments was from 2019! (2018??) Crazy, man!!
But what I really wanted to say was ... For those of you who could actually enjoy the movie for what it was, isn't it just a total mindBlow to put yourself in that situation? I mean, imagine if YOU were actually one of those guys in the cave, realizing that THOUSANDS of years have passed while you were galavanting on a hike/spelunk that you took on a whim some random Saturday morning! Imagine it! "Hey some of the guys are going on a day hike with a professor. Sounds fun! Let's do it! Oh and we gotta take what's-her-face so we can use her dad's Jeep." And that was your last day on Earth as you knew it.

Absolutely there was NO way for the teenagers in the cave to fully absorb all the implications of MILLENNIUM passing in 2 hours! Of course they couldn't react to all that in the short span of this movie! The youngest girl did bemoan her dead parents, IMHO they did in fact give all the emotional reaction they were able to face while still being emotionally prioritized on getting out of the cave. Yeah.

Also, Taylor, dude, thank you very much for creating a place for us to share our thoughts and stuff about this movie. Two thumbs to you! Thanks man:-)

I feel like the thinkers have wasted a lot of time not thinking.
Water is the element of life.
Time is the measurement of a complete cycle.
Travel is a measurement of speed through which life moves about through space while keeping time.
I just watched this movie on Netflix and I understand the confusion. The whirlwind that we went through in seemingly standstill motion.
The never ending debate is the very old question of, can time be measured? It depends on how you understand time.
Have you been diving? If so you will know that time is definitely different underwater. It's very slow. You set alarms so you don't run out of air as you will lose track of surface time. An hour will seem like 2 minutes!
Plus, you move much slower through water than you do air. Gravity is heavier underwater.
Day is much shorter in the shallows and nonexistent in the depths.
Measuring time underwater would not be the same as measuring it in the air.
In the cave where the air is wet and even wetter the deeper you go until you reach the slowest depth where the earliest human guards the first river to bring life. Study ancient texts regarding water, time and space. I promise you will end up more confused in regards to what you thought you knew. And if you stick with you may just find yourself a little wiser for the confusion.
Einstein had a theory about realms of life and time. Essentially, a dinosaur is sitting on your dwelling right now, according to Einstein.
The movie has taken time and revealed its wonder but not hardly the awe of time as it remains misunderstood. The movie, for time chasers, is very thought provoking.
It starts with water as it's well know to be the giver of life. It's fluidity is known to slow down time when you dive into its depth.
The wet feeling observed in the movie made me think of the intense humidity on this planet in her younger years. Early humans and other life forms could breathe the air when it would seem to drown us today given its high precipitation. But, we can breathe water even today as long as it has high contents of oxygen in it.
A cave, going into the earth maintains a steady temperature and sustainable oxygen levels, for a long ways down. Roots and surface water keep oxygen flowing even beneath us.
So, what better way to tell a story of time differentials than in a cave. As you can't very well take an audience diving with oxygen tanks. Plus, you would be even more confused to the analogy over the concept of time and the sciences that change time.
Then to cinch it off with more mind blowing information you have the human race living in cells as the travel around the planet waiting to return after her cycle through time.
You could learn how our solar system shifts around in our galaxy. That our galaxy is currently traveling at over 3 billion light years to our calendar year. We are definitely in slow motion from within. But when we shift closer to the edge we speed up. No worries we can be pulled out of our galaxy but we can be pushed out of it. Time will change for us as it will speed up. And when we move more into our galaxy time gets even slower.
Our galaxy is a small one as it only requires about 250 million light years to travel around. That's the maths as we know maths. Astronauts are telling us time and gravity by which we measure the speed of time is not the same neither are the maths. That's within our solar system... No telling what it's like outside of it.
So, the future humans used a pool over the hole of the cave to extract the later humans from it. A water barrier, not too cold nor hot to boot, to shield and protect them from the breach that made like on the planet where the cave is uninhabitable. Water, always giving life.
How did they find them? They couldn't answer that but it's a good guess that the beacon signal was captured as the girl, Cara I think, saw the vessel coming.
Why would a group of students bring along some siblings to find their professor? Because it wasn't deemed some dangerous expedition. They had researched and theorized the hippy cave and passed with flying colors or however Hopper put it. Hopper was never honest with them. It took the one kid, Furby, to figure it out for them.
This is why the parents had no objections.
If you want to get a real sense of what the movie was portraying... Learn a little about the theories of time, water and travel. Then go diving, after getting certified. These ppl did a brilliant job at using sciences, theories, and the time lapses through life giving water, to show you a realm that Einstein would have been proud of being shown as a possible place of existence. That is if you believe that time exists on all levels of life and it keeps on going even when time revolutions change geography.
Learn a little then watch the movie again. I promise you will still be confused because that's the beauty of time, it's elusive and ever changing power through the speed of travel.

It starts with water as it’s well know to be the giver of life. It’s fluidity is known to slow down time when you dive into its depth.
As you can’t very well take an audience diving with oxygen tanks.
That’s the maths as we know maths. Astronauts are telling us time and gravity by which we measure the speed of time is not the same neither are the maths. That’s within our solar system… No telling what it’s like outside of it.
So, the future humans used a pool over the hole of the cave to extract the later humans from it. A water barrier, not too cold nor hot to boot, to shield and protect them from the breach that made like on the planet where the cave is uninhabitable. Water, always giving life.
How did they find them? They couldn’t answer that but it’s a good guess that the beacon signal was captured as the girl, Cara I think, saw the vessel coming.
Why would a group of students bring along some siblings to find their professor? Because it wasn’t deemed some dangerous expedition. They had researched and theorized the hippy cave and passed with flying colors or however Hopper put it. Hopper was never honest with them. It took the one kid, Furby, to figure it out for them.
This is why the parents had no objections.
If you want to get a real sense of what the movie was portraying… Learn a little about the theories of time, water and travel.
I promise you will still be confused because that’s the beauty of time, it’s elusive and ever changing power through the speed of travel.

I think one of the characters said that she was gone for 2 seconds. Wouldn't that make it 6 months that she was on the surface?

I usually agree with you, such as your reviews of “Triangle” & “Predestination.” However, you states yourself that you usually have notepad & are more prepared, which in movie you state you were not.
I actually really enjoyed this movie, I think everything makes sense & it was definitely a fun & entertaining watch.
It may not be up there with “Predestination”, but it is a very cool movie on its own. I humbly suggest that you give it a second viewing.
In conclusion, I really hope they make a TimeTrap 2.
