This was such an uncomfortable movie to watch. Throughout I was trying to determine who the target was in the film. Who was safe and who was not but you really could not. And that’s why I was uncomfortable. I could not put anyone in a box. I could not separate myself. And in such a case, we are all at risk of being every single character. Period. And worse yet, this movie is about the current state of affairs - pick your country and there are people being dragged off and everyone is averting their eyes.

I’ve had this movie on my watch list for months but finally it became available to rent this week. I am hard pressed to say anyone in this film is the protagonist since they all had ulterior motives. As much as I wanted to like Georg, I could not because of his selfish behavior even though I can understand why. He, too, stood there while people were dragged off. And the lady with the dogs stated outright she hated them and was only using them to gain passage hence why she offed herself right after they were gone and she had her dinner with Georg since she knew she would not get transit. But ultimately what I think made me feel uncomfortable is that by setting this film in the current day, you find yourself thinking that you too may be that person standing idly by while migrants, refugees and illegal immigrants get dragged off and maybe not shot but still wind up in a horrible detention center somewhere. But by making the main characters look like everyone else, it puts you in the place thinking that this could possibly happen to you and not just others. I know what I’m trying to convey here but am having a hard time finding the right words. Basically by making the main characters Georg, Marie and Richard as those who could be the ones dragged off like we round up migrants, it puts you in their shoes even just for a few hours. Or in the case of Europe, you in the place of the refugees that pretty much wind up with a similar fate to our migrants. I don’t mean in regard to race or color but just the fact that it was not based on race or color. So I definitely understand why he chose to change the era to today which is actually quite genius. I’m planning on looking for some of his other films now.
