Another addition to the list of great movies that were spurned upon release.

This is one movie that I’ve dedicated to making my friends watch, and it’s one that I truly believe most critics got completely wrong. Not that I blame them. It should have been launched at its original release date (August the previous year), and should not have been advertised as an action sci-fi. Up against other giant films like US (not as good a film, in my estimation), and promoted as a sort-of reiteration of Independence Day, I think it set expectations that were bound to be dashed. I myself was surprised at the depth and movement of the narrative.

I find new things in the movie each time I watch it. I listened to the director’s commentary when the DVD came out (also months late; do these guys have a failure obsession?), and learned even more cool shit about the connection between the tracker bugs and the surveillance drones (parents looking for their larva!).

One of my favorite movies in years, and I’m really picky about movies. Not quite at the level of Arrival or Ex Mechina, but close, and I loved it more.
