Yeah I have to agree with Francis - I don't think Jason was ever replaced by Pluto, as evidenced by the burns on Pluto's face that are obviously long-healed. I think Jason is just very observant, and he's the only one who caught on that his mom might be one of the Tethered.

And I also agree with Francis that the Tethered aren't necessarily evil. I think the fact that Red escaped and went on to live a fairly normal life, to love her family and create meaningful connections, shows that the Tethered are capable of that. And obviously we all have the same capacity to be as cruel and violent as the Tethered; even more so, really, because we created them and then left them to rot. So who's really soulless here?

I don't think there's any single interpretation that explains everything, but I think the Tethered certainly also represent the worst parts of America that no one wants to look at - the homeless, the poor, the downtrodden that "must" exist to bolster the rest of society's wealth and comfort. The fact that we are ALL interchangeable and there's really nothing separating us at all except money and means.

I'm not entirely sure that Jason/Pluto got exchanged. We don't actually see Jason go into the mirror house, just the port-a-potty. It wouldn't make sense that Jason got his face burned and it's already healed after a few hours. There's also the part where white-mask mirror exactly what monster-mask does, wich become important at the death of white-mask. Monster-mask makes him walk backward until he's in the fire and stay there.

A lot of things are telegraphed in hindsight. Adelaide was the only "shadow" who could speak. Red once she got back to the family couldn't talk for a while, but they assumed it was PTSD. When Adelaide is explaining her story in front of the chalk board, she says the other shadows realized she was different and would be the one to free them (she's the only non-shadow)
When we see the shadows are starting to do Hands Across America, we're supposed to guess Red is in fact Adelaine. The real Adelaide was the one who saw it on TV and wanted to see it realized. ( i didn't know they were switched until they showed it though)
When Red kills Adelaine, she also makes the noises the shadow where making, letting her real identity slip. When i saw it, i though it was the real Adelaide becoming insane from the ordeal. ( Adelaine mention that the shadows have become insane from the hardish they lived through)

With the link Adelaide and Red had, i think Red realized Adelaide's desire to come back for vengeance. That's why she stopped dancing and also why she tells her husband that she's always been sure her twin would come back for her eventually.

Lastly, i don't think Red is an evil spawn of hell. While evil to kidnap Adelaine and take her place, it's understandable that she wouldn't want to be stuck in the horrible laboratory. Adelaine on the other hand, decide to make this plan to kill every single humans as revenge. She's much more bloodthirsty then Red. When Umbrae is killed, Red goes out of the car. We think it's to make sure Umbrae is dead, but it seems she's actually trying to accompagny her in her last moment.
Later when white-mask is there, she doesn't attack him and try to calm him. And when he's in flame, she's in distress.

Now that i'm writting this, it seems everything was humans' fault. They made the shadows ( somewhat vague). The only shadow who escaped lived a peacefull life. The one human stuck with the shadows can be seeing as the one who corrupted them into becoming violent. Without Adelaide, it's entirely possible the shadows would have been peacefull.

P.S. First time i writte here i think, but i love reading your reviews. You've also given me a bunch of good movie suggestions. =)
