Kathy's review made the most sense, idk where all this extra meaning and stuff came from this review and some of the comments. I think it's pretty straightforward that they would be better separate since Jay being around Samira would just put him in danger forever which Samira wouldn't want for him especially since she did end up falling for him. This review definitely made Samira and Jay sound way worse than they were. Also, at first I wanted Samira to keep her promise of splitting the diamonds 50/50 with Jay, but honestly she needs it more if the rest of her life is going to be in hiding and since she relieves Jay of the burden of being in danger as long as he is with her and Jay goes back to his regular life, she needs the diamonds more and I think Jay understands that (considering the way he isn't fazed by it and still tells her to call him if she needs him). Anyway, I liked this movie, definitely a good short watch. Dev Patel is amazing as always and Radhika Apte did such a good job playing Samira (she really showed the shameless desperation of a woman escaping forced marriage that would do anything to make that happen). Definitely gonna watch it again.

Hey Manoj,
It's what happens when I'm typing while not thinking about what it is that I'm doing. Thanks for the catch! hahaha. Indian... duh. I was blabbing and blabbing about the brilliance and beauty of India throughout and I Bangladesh-out of nowhere? No idea.

Thanks again.

Just watched it! Radhika Apte is brilliant and I can't decide whether the movie's a tribute to Godard's 'Breathless' or Double Indemnity. Her survival might depend on seducing Patel but she conveys so much more complexity and erotic force. I was impressed by the naturalness of the characters and although the money did not seem enough motivation I 'believed' the story in that way you do when you are enthralled by the story and the telling.

Taylor Holmes (sic): “ But instead, it’s a hired professional abductor who will free the bride-to-be from the social bonds of Bangladeshi social strictures.”

Where did Bangladesh come in the picture?

I agree with most of what Kathy said. Samira fell in love with Jay because to stay with him will mean he will also be hunted down along with her. Now, she can go back to Pakistan and claim that she ran away from abductor Deepesh who is already dead. So she is sacrificing her happiness for love.

Kathy, its quite obvious she still has the jewels. She mentions at point India is very big, thus she could easily blend into it in another region. I can see her going to Mumbi. To sell those diamonds all you need to do is go where there is wealth. Their first attempt to unload the diamond and the shop keepers rejection just tells me that he doesnt have such a market. But India is very big and Im sure someone like samira could live confortably in a place like Kashmir since she would speak punjbi.

I remember watching this movie few years ago and recently watched it again. Came here for further insight. Thanks

I think part of me wanted to see them together but the writing was on the wall how Samira was going to play Patel. You can see from the foreshadowing of how she goes swimming and how when she offers Patel to swim he declines.

Definitely an underrated movie!

My take on the movie was totally different.
Samira was being forced to marry a man she did not love... someone who did love her paid Patel to abduct her for him...$15,000... 5 up front and 10 later... once he got the girl and he was up to his ten thousand said boyfriend hit the brakes because of the Dead bodyguard... wanted to call the whole thing off and send her back home. He was a worthless dog anyway stealing gems from his folks to live on instead of getting a decent job. Samira is upset with him they get in an argument in the car and he ends up getting killed by Patel.
Samira does not seem overly upset by this... it makes a deal with to tell to split the jewels then run away together and hide.
The two have become close Patel has become extremely fond of her after his initial super distrust of her.
Did she ever love her former boyfriend at all... she got over him very quickly. The ending of the movie made perfect sense to me... I believe she fell in love with Patel and knew that they would be hunted by her arranged marriage husband forever. She took part of the money to get home on and left him with the rest. She sacrificed her life to save his. I thought it was a nice love story.
Sad for them both.
My question is.. what happened to the jewels? No mention of them at the end of the movie...
Did she take them or did she leave them no one knows.
Well it is sad that he killed The Bodyguard that was definitely in self-defense and I don't think anyone cared that the boyfriend died... he was pretty much a self-absorbed rotten man-child.

Agreed on your explanation of how transactional our relationships have become with each other. Notice how many scenes involved the characters buying items and services from vendors with specific mention about the prices of the individual items.

Very much like the famous Oscar Wilde quote of how "The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing".

Whilst watching I was wondering why none of the characters were getting any proper character development and it did seem a deliberate choice to highlight the themes of the movie.

Very much enjoyed the movie as a subversion of the thriller genre and the growing trend of not having heroic protagonists at the center of the story.
