I’m going through your list of Mindjob films. I’ve said this before but the problems with Mindjob films, or any films for that matter anymore is that I am looking for the twist from the very beginning. Thanks to The Sixth Sense, Dressed to Kill, Beautiful Mind and others (Is Wizard of Oz the first and ultimate Mindjob movie?), I watch thinking the psychiatrist is the killer, this is a dream, he is dead, that person isn’t real and nothing surprises me anymore. This is the big reason that “Shutter island” was so terrible – I knew Leonardo DiCaprio’s character was a patient from the beginning. I had the same issue with Uncanny. David was so robotic in his movements and manner of speaking, AND, he was wearing a t-shirt that said “Property of MIT” for goodness sake!
I am getting tired of movies written and directed by men where beautiful intelligent women fall for a weirdo disturbing person with no personality because that would not happen, but it does happen in the fantasy world of loser nerds. When Joy, the reporter with a background in tech, reaches out on the rooftop and makes the first move and holds David’s hand on Day 4, I immediately thought how preposterous that was. But that is exactly what a male filmmaker thinks or wishes a woman would do around in a disturbing uncomfortable situation. It’s a shortcut on a movie and it’s a cheat. As for the plot, reporter visits creator and AI robot and tension is created, there is no surprise here and nothing new. It bothers me that Joy does not sense danger – has she never seen a movie before, has she never read science fiction? Why can’t there be a world where people are conscious of stories and therefor ultravigilant. That is why the first Scream movie was good, they were aware that movies exist. For all her intelligence, Joy was oblivious (screaming “I”m in love with him” Really?!!), or at least that is how men directed and wrote her. In a way, Joy was their creation, after all as David exclaims “who needs a queen when you could win the game without one?”
