How did I miss this gem of a movie? I went in blind and was absolutely entertained. This is one smart movie full of surprise turns and dry humour and sheer nastiness too. It's the best bits of The Karate Kid, Fight Club and Kung Fu Hustle put together for me. Despite the barely suppressed undercurrent of meanness and a clear shift in tone from light-hearted to darkly serious from around the midway point, credit must be given to the writer/director that the jokes never let up too: the put-down our hero suffered in French from the opening act, to the sic command our hero dished out to the German Shepherd in German ('"Your other left") from the final act. If I didn't know better, I'd say the whole thing has even achieved poetic greatness!

However, it is also sad that this movie is so under-loved and flies so under the radar that it probably won't recover its investment from receipts. So I hope the good reviews and more exposure from sites like THiNC will grant the director more opportunities to make his own brand of highly original, quirky and witty films such as Faults and The Art of Defense.
