There are many clues given throughout this movie to hint that it is just about regret. Not just Calvin's regret, but his brother Ed's too. Calvin is never the same man when he comes home from the war. We know Maxine somehow dies before he comes back, hence him throwing away all her letters. And for what? Killing people he didn't know in a far off country. Assassinating Hitler was just a representation of fighting and killing nazis. So, while he regrets not asking Maxine to marry him, he regrets leaving in the first place. Now, when he's talking to Ed, in the barbershop, on the bench....I believe Calvin is already dead. Those are Ed's memories of his brother, his regrets at not knowing him better. That dinosaur, which was probably one of the items in the box, along with maybe ashes or the engagement ring, is something Ed kept as a memory of his brother. Even when they spoke on the bench, Calvin asks him why he believes his story about Bigfoot. (And the Bigfoot was purposefully meant to look fake so we'd know it's all a fantasy) Furthermore Calvin miraculously shows up to fish. No. He's dead. He probably killed himself in the woods and his body was never found. What we saw when calvin dug up his grave was probably spiritual. Like, he finally can move on to be with Maxine in the next life(represented by the box)

Such great insight from all the contributors. What was with the odd edit of him standing in front of the ring of fire, black screen for a second then in full battle mode with Bigfoot? So out of character from the structure of the rest of the movie.

I would want the writer to explain his story. There are far too many holes. It is a fantastical story. Some of the plot points in the movie seem to be inserted for no reason. Like the dog. What was he doing in the story? The family was so obviously upset to be relinquishing their dog. And in the end, Calvin just releases it. It really served no purpose in his travels or the story. But I assume there was SOME purpose. I feel like it was just stuck in there because, well, why not? And there seems to be several instances of "well why not". His uniform by the way, has NINE hashmarks on the left sleeve. Each hashmark in the Army stands for 3 years. Which means he was in 27 years. Seems very over done especially given that when he served was between 1941-1945, and the uniform from his retirement is STILL, after 27 years, a WWII issue. Not likely. His shoulder patch when he is saying goodbye to his brother, and he hands him the dinosaur, is from the 1st Army, and worn on his right shoulder. This is your combat shoulder, so when he is saying goodbye to his brother, he already has had combat. Seems strange. And how do you get a Legion of Merit, when what you did was Top Secret and washed away? And when did he attend Officers Candidate School? And college? He is after all a Captain. He worked at a hat haberdashery before serving. Oh and my big one, when he is talking to the Russian who shaves him, it is clear he speaks many languages. Okay when did he learn them all? Details just shoved in. You can't make sense of the story, because it doesn't make sense. Clearly it is about regret. Dude can't propose to his girlfriend, but he can become a superspy with multiple languages? Sure, why not. I'm ex-military and very respectful of veterans, and very aware of clandestine activities, and I would have been rolling my eyes at this guy. How about this. He is so deep in regret, and being actually meek, that he can't deal with leaving behind his girlfriend, and her subsequent death. Oh and the box has a gun in it. In my opinion, he is delusional. He makes up stuff to rationalize not marrying his girlfriend.

I’m saying Maxine sent him the box. It’s was waiting for him when he returned home from the army. When he turned the light on the box was in the package underneath the letters. He read and threw away the letters and kept the dick Tracey comics Maxine saved for him that she saved and didn’t miss a day. From his regrets and coming to terms with what he had to do for his country Calvin couldn’t bring himself to open the box and enjoy the comics when Calvin finally came to terms with his service including killing Bigfoot he was released from the curse and showed positive out look on how his life played out so maybe tomorrow he and his faithful friend Ralph could open the box and enjoy the comics together.

My problems with this movie arenmuch more fundamental.

How is it that he supposedly dies and is buried and shows up, presumably the next day, and then goes to his nieces play at a great school and nobody notices?

And what’s in the box? We know it’s not pictures of us dead girlfriend because we already saw him throw those pictures away.

And then he’s walking down the street away from the graveyard and he feels something in his shoe and he pulls it out and says oh there it is. What is it? It’s not the dinosaur that his brother gave him when he was a little kid because he’s already giving a dinosaur back to his brother at the play.

This movie just really made me angry. It’s like you’re waiting for some monumental payoff, some punchline, something meaningful. But all we get is, at the very end, it seems that all is well with our character because he found some mysterious thing in his shoe.

We don’t know what it is.

We don’t know what’s in the box.

Oh my God! Somebody save me!

I think that Sam Elliot's character does not exist. I think that his brother (the barber) holds this idealistic image of himself in his mind, manifested by Sam Elliot's character. He may, perhaps have shizophrenia, or in another view PTSD. it is notable that the movie becomes even more fantasitical after Sam Elliot's character goes to his brother the barber and then stops taking his pills. Like some lost problem suddenly had slipped back in. Perhaps the barber was not allowed to go to war, or chose not to. Then he lost the love of his life. Maybe because of his choice to not go to war? Or maybe he did go to war and the act of killing people that really were not the true evil entity was too much to deal with. So he made up this story in his mind of killing the one actually responsible. The stone in Sam Elliots shoe is perhaps the constant gnawing of a conscience (for either sitting the war out...or going and killing those he did not feel really deserved it). The box that is usually kept under the bed out of sight and then eventually buried before being dug back up.....is reality. The clocks never tell real time. The wrist watch circling a nazi image... the clock in the barber shop is only correct when seen in a mirror... the clock in Sam Elliot's house just birds no numbers... i am not sure what that represents..but perhaps that the barber is stuck in time...and looking backward rather than forward. I don't know for sure about any of this, but that is what makes this movie pretty amazing. It is open to interpretation. I loved it
