I think Rosie was dead by then eh. In effect Klenzendorf desired to be a famous German soldier and his last action was actually more heroic by simply saving a child before he was executed. Don't over think it - but very hard not too - I agree.

I agree with you 100% in that the movie was brilliant. I also came across Jojo Rabbit not knowing what to expect, only watching out of boredom, but when I finished watching it, I felt as if the Universe had given me a gift that was such a pleasant surprise, I immediately watched it again. I know there's controversy in dealing with such a serious subject so lightly, but sometimes that's what's needed. I figure it's like a the sugar coating on a bitter pill. It still does the job in the end of reminding us how corrupt ideologies rob us, adults and children alike, of our innocence. That being said, my theory on why Klenzendorf covered for fake Inge is pretty simple. He's already experienced the wrath of Rosie when he was indirectly responsible for maiming Jojo and more than feeling guilty about that, he just didn't want to get in trouble with her if he outed fake Inge. You can see throughout the movie that his lightheartedness and humanity don't get overtaken by ideology (even in the first scenes in camp) and is just going through the motions of war or following orders with substantial compliance but not as hard core as Jojo was in the beginning. So I felt his actions were an extension of feeling protective or even remorseful about that camp incident where Jojo was injured.
