In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2020/01/17/explaining-why-funny-games-is-only-meta-hilarious/#comment-1027861">Lisa</a>.

Maybe my title was confusing. I liked the movie. I didn't like the topic - per se. I didn't like the abusive violence. But I loved how it wasn't about the violence, and rather it was about you watching the violence. It was a fantastic thinking person's film that only the rare watcher will realize what is going on. Which made me really appreciate what is happening here. Better yet, the director thought so highly of the film, he literally made it twice in order to get more eyeballs on it.

So yeah, I liked it as a philosophy 301 class. It gave us quite a lot to think about.

Well, you can just say we made you watch it! I honestly knew nothing about it before I watched it so I was quite shocked watching it but not enough to shut it off of course.

Exactly this is the reason why I couldn't watch the German original (and remake even more). Haneke made this movie "in your face". Because people need violence, exactly because of the shadenfreude. The main torturers aren't two metafictional psychopaths - it's us, being fascinated with gore.

So I still haven't seen the movie, as resistance against Haneke's honest claim about the dark quintessence of humanity. But mostly as resistance against bloodthirsty humanity itself.

Are you familiar with the films of Lars Von Trier? I’m sure you are being the movie aficionado you are. Particularly his latest film, The House That Jack built which is basically just extreme sick violence from start to finish and it was supposed to be him throwing up his middle finger at the establishment. Most films treat the killing of children as a big deal and in this film, one is blown away like nothing. This film reminds me of something he might make. It’s there to shock you in a society where we have seen and heard everything and are so desensitized at this point to the extreme. Granted, I watched this one some years ago so I needed to read the refresher on what happened but I remember feeling dirty for watching it at the time. So I can’t say (or won’t say?) I liked it because what would that say about me? I have to give kudos to anyone who dares make a film like this and throws in our face that we would actually watch it and then even discuss it after? Especially the meta ending which removes all hope that there ever could be any kind of happy ending or satisfactory resolution for the protagonists. Nope, rewind! Ok, I enjoyed it. Guess I need one of your meetings!
