Just a theory, but.. maybe Jethro is Norval's biological father. That is why he indicates Norval to listen as it was important to let him know the mother's backstory. Also, Jethro gets killed by the "tiger" sign, and that is the final time the tiger appears, other than the epilogue scene in which little Norval DROPS the stuffed tiger to go into his "other" father's arms; the man who actually cared for the well-being of both Norval and his mother. Of course Norval never gets to realize such a thing.

"Arthur" could be the name Jethro gave / would've given Norval if he had stayed to raise him. And yea, Jethro is depicted as the kind of guy who would find no moral issues doing everything he'd be implied to be doing if he was indeed Norval's father (even if he knew that he was); basically knocking up a prostitute and leaving her and the child, leaving his own son badly injured (notice he doesn't kill Norval, tho), and setting up to do some harm to the aforementioned prostitute who gave him an unwanted son.

As for the ending, maybe they both die, only one of them dies, or it could be that they both live. It's left unclear. They're both in really bad shape, but the movie never specifies what happens, which seems very on purpose.

Dude am I the only one who noticed that Norvals dad didn’t actually appear to die? He looks like he’s dead but then you see a close up of their hands next to each other and he puts his hand on Norvals, I thought it was the other way round when I first watched it but just watched it again and realised.

Totally. This Taylor guy is a schlep. Go back to school and get a film degree dangit. Only guys with film degrees can use this Oedipus stuff! Like, you should be honestly an Oedipal expert before you can get all high and mighty on your Oedipus Rex high horse! Gah. These liberals these days.

This post's title is misleading. It has little to do with the post. Who is Arthur? Did his father die? It kind of seems like he died because he didn't answer his question and was obviously in bad shape, but he put his hand on his, looked at him, etc. The ending isn't mysterious or anything, but it's not quite clear.

Also the Oedipus topic is a reach. You're trying to think really deep into something simple and make a high-brow explanation relating to classical literature for a fairly straightforward story that has almost no semblance of a link to the Greek tragedy.

Gotta fact check. It was the director not the screenwriter whose father passed. Norval was stabbed in the face with a receipt spike, not shot with a crossbow. Possibly other things too. Kinda sloppy.

I wanted an opinion on why Jethro uttered “Arthur” before dying. I was thinking maybe he believed Brian took, in addition to Jethro’s money, Jethro’s kid (who Jethro would have named Arthur). But I wasn’t sure what other people thought. That’s the crazy ending that needed an actual explanation. I agree with the commenter who called it an opinionated rant and a misleading post.

Hahahaa- no worries at all. Could be the nicest comment I receive all day.

But outside of you saying I have no idea what I'm talking about - I don't see you positing any alternative explanation for what happened in this movie. So, I'm feeling pretty good about my Freud take at this point. Give me something to work with, and maybe we can talk after that.
