Also I agree with Lisa 100%. Production companies are doing there best to try to include all audiences …hence dubbing.

Just putting out my thoughts which are ONLY my thoughts. I honestly believe that dubbing a foreign film takes little bit away from the original film’s authenticity. Yeah you can watch it, but you will never get the same meaning or feeling that you get from the original (all my Dark fans hear me!). Now, it takes a certain type of movie aficionado to enjoy foreign films. Foreign movie lovers have to pay attention to the movie. Yeah, subtitles make you do that. There’s no muti-tasking when it comes to watching movies like Parasite, City of Lost Children, Amelie, The Devil’s Backbone, etc. You can’t be cooking dinner or putting together something you got from Amazon or IKEA. That just won’t work. Which is why my love for foreign films began over thirty years ago, when I was much younger and I had more free time and we had to go to the movies to see a good foreign film.

With that being said, foreign films aren’t for everyone, but let me just say this…. A fantastic quality movie is very hard to come by these days. I’ll give the same advice I give to my very smart, yet very busy brothers who don’t want to ‘read’ when they sit down to watch a good movie…don’t waste your time recommending a foreign movie to these people. There are still other good movies they can sit down and chilax to without having to read the screen.

It’s not for everyone and if you don’t like subtitles that doesn’t make you uncultured. You just ain’t got time for all that (as my oldest brother says). Trust me there are still movies in ENGLISH or whatever your language is. Go see one of those. Just don’t talk trash about foreign movies you don’t want to watch or don’t have the bandwidth to sit down and really watch it in it’s original format… no shade, no problem.

There is usually a setting on all streaming services to switch it to a dubbed version if there is some reason you cannot read the subtitles. I know it exists on Netflix because my boyfriend and I were watching The Platform the other day and his settings had the dubbed version on and it took us a while to figure out how to switch it back to the original Spanish with subtitles. So I don’t think anyone is being left out in the cold. Measures are usually taken so everyone can enjoy the movie. My commentary is about myself and what I enjoy and that’s listening to films in the original language.

The blind and the dyslexic aren’t able to contend with subtitles but who cares about people with disabilities when it interferes with the novelty factor of a foreign film with subtitles.

You have no idea how many reviews and comments I’ve left on Amazon addressing this when I see people giving a low score to a fantastic film simply because it’s not in English. I can’t watch anything dubbed as the mouth not following the words drives me insane and reminds me of the Kung Fu movies they always played when I was a kid with the awful dubbing! Even some friends of mine won’t watch a film with subtitles because reading is just soooooo hard I guess.

I was trying to think of an example where dubbing would be ok. What about if someone is illiterate and incapable of reading subtitles? I mean, let’s teach this person how to read, but that’s about the only reason I can imagine someone complaining about foreign language movies/not wanting to read closed captions.

But, I am VERY excited because I think Parasite opened the door for future foreign language movies to be watched by previously sheltered Americans. I got my dad to watch The Raid a few years ago, which doesn’t have that much dialogue, but I think it opened the door for Parasite as my dad already watched it on Hulu. It’s a big deal. I’m also seeing lots of posts on Reddit like: “I watched Parasite. Give me some more good foreign language movies” This is amazing!

I cried when Parasite won. I love being able to watch history happen. And that this history was made from someone so incredibly talented and passionate about his work. I have high hopes for the future of cinema and people’s watching habits.
