You are overlooking a major aspect of this movie that calls into question everything that you have described. This entire town was on a serious hallucinogenic drug that apparently warped all of their perceptions or perhaps gave them deeper insight into what was actually going on. But the fact is that this is employed several times in the movie, in fact when Teresa first arrives in the beginning of the action she is immediately given a drug. I don’t know what it really means for the sequence of events that follow, but it is enough to call into question many of the things that we see on screen. Taken at face value the film does expose a polemic of modern life between the first and the developing world where they are left to die on their own, but there is another layer here that I don’t fully understand.

Furthermore, I thought the gun crazy Americans who just want to shoot shit (and fuck afterwards) was a bit overdone and a shot (no pun intended) at American gun culture. Add to that Michael, who is a sadistic German, and you really have reinforced some tired stereotypes. Maybe those the town already has?

It was an intriguing ride through a bleak landscape and I am still digesting the meaning.

Thanks, for the review. I really enjoyed the movie. I think you have a good point about the town and community. I think the survival of this town through the years is the fact that they are a community as a whole. You really don’t even get to know too many names of the towns people and I think that’s important. Their connection to one another is homogenous even though their skin and hair is different. They are underestimated by outsiders who don’t see them as people or individuals. That’s the very thing that makes them so powerful. My favorite scene is when Tony Junior comes to the town and within five minutes the townspeople go from outdoor market to ghost town. I fuc#ing love it! These people do not play reindeer games.

Thanks for this – I was confused by the UFO drone, the earpieces, how such a group would even get together etc. On one level it’s just a silly film, but then there’s just so much more going on here. You did a good job here.
