I think the ‘wanting mare, could be a play on the word nightmare referring to the reoccurring dream of the world before and not being able to escape the way thing are in their timeline now

Just watched tonight. I believe when the horse ate Eirah, it took on her spirit. So she DID make it to Levithen, and Hadeon was redeemed by getting her there. I loved your thoughts on original sin–they added so much to my viewing of the film. I absolutely will be thinking about it for a long time.

Yeah,
I agree. Everything you said was spot on. The movie is more an emotional flood than a specific story with specific plot points to hit. I think I watched it three times that first weekend. And then this weekend I let it run twice while I was working. Just so fantastic to let it roll, and let it wash over you. It’s such a rare movie. And all of it CGI? And done by one guy basically? It’s fairly unbelievable.

I sort of think the lyricalness of the movie, the sound, the immersiveness of it, just tossed the dialog out the window as being secondary. I think he took an approach to sound like Nolan does in that he played with it all and did his own thing.

This is a gem of a little film. It’s like a fairy tale of sorts. I don’t always like films like this but I enjoyed this one. Moira definitely broke the rules by telling of the dream which is probably why she burns the ticket at the end. Plus we might conclude she’s lived her life for her daughters and perhaps is not as wanting as she was when she was younger. It’s not exactly the life she chose being saddled with a baby at a young age but it’s the life she got and I think many can relate to lost dreams from when we were younger. I also liked that she believed her adopted daughter did make it onto the ship. The decision to spare her the hardship was definitely made from love. My only issue with this film is like you said, no subtitles and some of the dialogue was very hard to hear. But the actors carried this film well even when there wasn’t much dialogue happening and more inference as to what happened instead of being told directly. Hopefully it will get out there eventually so more people can see it.

Occasionally I’ll talk about the score, or the music selection. But more about the emotions and impact. I’m not really well versed in music, so I wouldn’t say it’s my area really. But yeah, affecting music can turn a meh movie totally upside down, especially when it aligns with the story so perfectly. Maybe I should hire you for exactly Zero of the dollars, to add a music section to each write up that I do! hahaha.

I just read your explanation of the “Wanting Mare” I haven’t seen it, but I want to now. Do you ever include discussion concerning the music that can add oh so much to a movie? I ask that because I just recently watched, albeit much too late, “Z is for Zacheriah” and it is sad enough and filled with yearning. (I read your synopsis of it – thank you so much – because I wasn’t sure of what I had just seen.) Include the almost screeling sounds of melancholia that comes from the the hymn Ann plays. (She says she can play other tunes but she never does.) The sound of the people of the south (Scotland, Ireland, Wales) and there is a keening for something Ann wants almost primaly but cannot have. Any soul who has known this desire understands Ann. But, can we really understand Ann? Her situation is finite. She may have had only 2 choices and the man who is left behind just reduced it to 1.
