I interpret the ending differently. As long as Dean stayed at the hotel stuck in the loop, he was never going to change and therefore never find lasting happiness with Lana. But I took the ending to signify that by leaving and working out his issues over the next year, he returned as a changed man who had let go of his obsessive controlling behavior and was now ready to be the man Lana could be happy with going forward.

Thanks to Alan for the great recommendation.

On the supposed "happy" ending that one Dean with the flowers and candy has: rest assured, he'll screw that up somehow. The Dean we followed only needed to stay at the beach with that Lana. That ending would have been like the Hector we see with his wife at the end of Timecrimes. But Dean is obsessive and controlling to the point that he could not resist reacting to that phone call. This obsessive desire to control is demonstrated at its most extreme when he unnecessarily repeats the known conversation with himself through Lana with the earpiece. Such a great moment to let us know Dean is just going to get it all wrong, regardless of how many ways happenstance sends a Lana back his way.

Thanks so much Alan for recommending this movie (If you are curious how to recommend a movie for us to discuss, try out the red tab below.) you always get a free pass to the front of my movie queue. Just say, "I'm Infinite Man Alan... Abbra Cadabbra!" and voila, you will queue-jump like a mad man. Thanks again. Such a great film.

I actually started an infographic detailing out the ins and outs of this movie... but there are so many moves, and it gets so complicated... gah. Maybe I'll crack it some day. Going to keep playing with it.

A really fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet manages to totally twist your mind trying to keep up with all the iterations. And it even manages to have a happy ending.
