It looks a lot more basic, than the (any) analysis. I guess that this might've been illustrated by the jump chamber and electronics. Seems like it's a story about a girl whose life fell apart, in all directions, hopes and dreams dashed and that's all; and it wasn't meant to be technical, dunno. :)

Oh and I forgot to mention yesterday that thing she does with her cat is super annoying! It sounds like a parody of a person talking to a cat. And I’m a cat rescuer so I like cats. But if I spoke to them like she does in the film I expect they would want to claw my eyes out. I mean, why? Being an introvert doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be totally cray but the way she reacts to cats is cray! I could never watch this film again not only because I didn’t like it but because her cat speaking voice makes me want to break things. But yeah, nothing she does in this film ever redeems her. Including how she treats her poor cat. If she loved him she wouldn’t have shoved him in an untested homemade time machine!

Ok, I just watched this and I don’t understand why she didn’t tell herself not to build the machine when one of her shifts put her back to when her father was still alive and her younger version comes home to make him dinner. Instead she hides in a closet. And why the heck does she think the library chick can help her through this? With her cat drawings? Like Chris I believe only her first jump was intentional and every one after that was a side effect from her being unable to exist as 2 of her in the same place. But this could have been an easy solve if she just told her younger self not to take on this project. In the hands of some better writers and with a cast that wasn’t acting like it was a high school play, I think this really could have been a good idea.
But such is life.

Taylor, thanks for doing the write-up. Your posts always are a help! This movie is as indie as they come. I agree with your points about a generalized lacking of greater narrative cohesion. Jigsaw pieces that we wish were there, but just aren't there. I guess what I liked more than anything else was the trope itself. I'm sure there are others (remind me), but I'm trying to think of other time travel films where you have traveler transport themselves once (or twice), and then, as a result, they become a prisoner of time... a time floater.... a time victim. Theresa(s) condition accelerates... such that ends up shifting/imploding backwards and forwards, almost like it were a impending seizure. No way to predict it exactly, no way to control it. And no way to know how many of her there may be. I should mention.... The director/writer Jacob Leighton Burns has responded to a few of my tweets (hint). I asked him two questions. One, I wanted to see if I was right about the # of "Theresa purposefully enters the machine" shifts vs uncontrolled chaos shifts.... he tweeted with "overwhelming majority of her shifts are random, she only successfully uses the machine on herself a couple of times". I will admit that this was not clear to me during my watching of the film. .......... And my second question to Jacob was..... whether there might be any easter eggs (things missed) gained upon a 2nd viewing. He tweeted in the affirmative, with "I’ve been told it rewards rewatches, so I bet you notice a lot of things on your own!". So, now I need decide whether to take up that challenge. I'm leaning into it, for sure! That being said, I may also just load up Hippopotamus or SDT instead.

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2020/08/14/shifter-movie-warning-discussion-and-reinvisioning/#comment-1069081">Chris T</a>.

Yeah, I can sort of see that she was "jumping" or was out of control mentally. I thought of that, but there just wasn't enough to go on really to construct any sort of theory about anything. Sure, I'd love to have the writer/director explain what I might have been missing. I definitely will give the benefit of the doubt if they give me something! hahah.

I've reached out to the director/writer Jacob Leighton Burns for some insight. I mentioned your analysis, and also mentioned a few theories I have. With any luck, maybe he'll provide some answers. One theory... I was sure that there was yet another Theresa version sitting in the diner --- a gal who looks a lot like Theresa, who has a menu up to her face the entire time. It seemed odd to me, but I wonder. I also thought her journal of jumps were not machine-run jumps, but instead were jumps happening to her uncontrollably... like in the movie theatre. She's phasing in and out of time, and I think there could even more more than 2 of her. As for the acting, I agree it's weak, but may also be intentional on the part of Theresa. She's an extreme introvert. She doesn't want to interact with anyone, not her boss, her relative who comes to visit, even her recent girlfriend. She's playing uncomfortable quite well.
I guess there was a live virtual Q&A done back on 8/12. I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy of that. If I get more tidbits, I'll share. I didn't love the film, but sometimes, you watch a film and it stays with you. This one is doing that.
