I'm pretty sure Magda is more that a willing participant. I love the twist that she is chained to the demon without choice when in reality, she picks and punished evil men.

I do think she was related to the first demon created. I think the Amulet goddess used her body to punish the father.

Thanks for the review. The film was slow and muddled and boring and about fantastical, illiterate, ignorant, stupendously hypocritical/illogical/absurd/hilarious/insane and especially irrational beliefs and belief systems.
The first being that demons exist. That all evil is from
Another dimension. No it’s not, all evil IS HERE, in the slaughterhouses and human indifferences and lack of compassion for baby animals which then extends out to a bloodlust for other humans. Because after all, if you pick on and eat babies you can easily pick on and murder each other, right, and people do.
I know religions were simply created to attempt to understand what the typical human being cannot possibly understand, so they must be told what to think. That much is overwhelmingly evident, to me at least. So when you spend hundreds of years passing down the post office game of unwritten rules and regulations & finally get them into a book that’s been severely tampered with by egomaniacs who think they know what they’re talking about but never did any research, you end up with movies like this talking about things that humans can’t possibly understand, and showing depictions of a cross between a plastic rat and a bad and calling that a demon L O L! Very sad. How blasé. How completely unoriginal, overdone, numb, non-inventive, and cliché.

The director Romola Garai said that Magda is the amulet figure, based on early neolithic art, and the idea of a matriarchal religion, that pre-dates Christianity (such as Pagan deities).

She said that the men who were made to suffer were both rapists - the first one (Mother) being a paedophile into incest, and a murderer. And the second male victim, a rapist again. The director wanted to tackle issues such as the cultures which dis-empower women and enable male violence against women, but also instead of all-male power religions such as Christianity - where God, Jesus, 12 male apostles are the important males, the director wanted women to be the ones with the power in her movie. Hence Magda gives the amulet to Miriam, as a statement of female power - and justice meted out for the rape, which Thomaz had got away with in life - running away for a fresh start in London.

This was a great write up as I had all the same feelings about this film after watching it. And yes, the Amulet woman is definitely Magda and I fully believe the name to be intentional. She proves at the end that she isn’t going to let this demon babysitting business get her down and she just tosses him in the back seat and sets off on a road trip to give the amulet back to Miriam. Loved that! And I loved the misdirection of the film making you believe Tomaz was a decent chap until we find out he’s a vile rapist. So a fitting end for him! And agree with deKev, “chronological disorder’ is a keeper!

First off, let me just say that this review, or non-review as you like to remind us, is possibly the funniest one I have read on your site and I have read many. My personal fave: 'chronological disorder'. LOL, seriously LOL.

I'm in full agreement with your personal take on the movie that this is about 'ferreting out sexual predators and meting out their just punishment'. Initially, I had thought that Tomaz did not deserve the same horrendous punishment as Christopher General aka mother, because after all Tomaz had stopped short of killing Miriam after raping her, while Christopher had murdered his own wife just to elope with his own daughter (gasp!). But having giving it more thought, I now think it was the unrepentant and spiteful nature of Tomaz, that was revealed to the audience when he insisted on having Magda accompany him, that sealed the deal for Sister Claire to dish out the harshest punishment a la Christopher's. Meaning to say, Tomaz might have avoided the birthing of bat-like creatures as an added form of punishment for his crimes, had he not persisted in dragging-along Magda to serve as a fellow prisoner in hell, yeah?

One slight error or minor disagreement with your detailed analysis though is that the Shell/Amulet goddess thingy at the end of the film is Magda, or the visage resembling Magda in any case, and not Miriam. I know this because the subtitles said so, ahem. Which kinda brings to mind the burning question of who then is Magda?

I'd like to think that she is an Avenging Angel, one of the honest-to-goodness original Avenging Angels, the "ones that carry out God’s judgment upon mankind for their wicked deeds (Genesis 19:1-29)"? Clues? Well, apart from the visage of her as the Shell Goddess, there is also the final scene of her meeting up with Miriam that sort of closes the case of Miriam vs Tomaz. Furthermore, she also seems to act rather strangely or maybe even otherworldly, when amongst other people, especially during the pub dance scene. Also, I don't think Magda and Claire are evil by any objective morality. But hey, wasn't it entrapment when Claire lures Tomaz to Magda in the first place? After all, Tomaz did not actively seek out Magda or Claire? Possibly. But then again, just to be absolutely fair, Claire and Magda had also given Tomaz plenty of chances to 'opt out' throughout his stay at the house, so to speak. Even near the very end when given the freedom of choice to choose his own companion in hell, he could easily have named any other person. Or better yet, had he not chosen anyone else to serve as his companion, it would likely have lessened his punishment in all honesty. So I think it was a combination of lust, hero complex, need for redemption and forgiveness, and sheer meanness and spite, that seals his own fate.

Now, just to finish off with a minor detail that you might have missed: the court that was supposed to hear the case of Christopher General is called Magdalen Magistrates Court. Coincidence (again) much?
