Interesting take on the movie Black Bear. I feel like there is a specific meaning to the movie, although it certainly is not straightforward. I will say it's clear that Allison does not get killed by the bear; the bear is definitely a metaphor.

We've done an in-depth analysis of the movie -- covering numerous aspects of its meaning; if you're interested, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/CGlaTE4aGjM.

I felt like the second half of the film was what came first and her reality, and the first half is a short she had written after the fact as a way to take back control. She picks up from her scene on the lake and changes the direction of the movie. It shows the movie she's written, and then why she wrote it. I felt pretty clear about this before reading your article.. now I don't know!

I kind of wonder if this is a Catch-22 situation. I'm not sure which of the stories came first (although I'd argue the fist half, because Aubrey Plaza's character seems to embrace the bear instead of being tormented by it), but it's a cycle she can't break out of. She experienced one half of the story, the other half is like a personal hell, and then she keeps cycling through the two as fate's way of teaching her a lesson.

Thanks for your insights into Black Bear. I was confused from the point of the blackout at the end of Part 1 to the end of the movie. After the film ended, I immediately came to Google with the search term, "I was confused watching Black Bear". I'm glad I soon found your link. Your explanations and theories on the movie will help me sleep at night. Otherwise, I know I would be tossing and turning, wondering WTF did I just watch.

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2020/12/06/what-the-hell-was-that-black-bear-ending/#comment-1095717">hayden</a>.

Hey Hayden,
Nice! Yes, the movie and the play are very very similar. They flip the camera vantage behind the stage. It’s on prime, it is so fantastic the deeper into the unraveling goes. And after I learned it was a play I went out of my way to see the stage version too.

It is interesting that the screenplay author originally intended for take two to be the same as take one, but with new insights based on perspective. Tells me a lot about the story that they changed it. That maybe it was more about her writing than anything else?

Thanks for commenting amigo. Don’t be a stranger. Glad you liked it.

And yet again I find myself exactly where it appears I should be, not only was this an incredible recommendation that I had not heard of, but to make my head truly explode was the fact that I too, have never really talked about my love for the, live play as I saw it, called noises off which I swear on everything I was also thinking about when watching this movie. So yeah that little coincidence is craaaaazxzy. Now I know that there was a movie version and I'm not sure if you mentioned seeing the live play, but what is particularly interesting about seeing it on stage is you literally get to see the play over from a completely separate vantage point. The entire stage is physically turned around so you see it from backstage. But a key takeaway and what I noted about both the movie and noises off on stage, is that so much of the substance is what you dont't actually see, and then as your vantage point changes it becomes about what you actually know that your not seeing.
Great stuff
