I read what Luke said about it being her fault if she's drunk and kissing and having sex as a willing participant if she's not passed out. I'm sorry but have you ever heard of "black out drunk"? Where the woman may seem awake and going along with it but she's really so wasted that she has no idea what she's doing and if sober would have NEVER had sex with the guy? Your best bet Luke.. outside of your wife or girlfriend who doesn't have an issue with having sex with you while wasted... I say.. DONT HAVE SEX WITH WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN DRINKING. Call it a night and wait until she is sober. I woke up in a house I didn't recognize next to the guy I vaguely remember talking to at the bar in my 20s. He said I came back to his place and we had sex... but I remember NONE OF IT. He said I was dancing around to music and took my top off and that started it. Again.. no memory of it. Did I report rape? No.. because I blamed myself for getting wasted. I was NAIVE and young because I could have because I don't remember giving consent.. it was my word against his that I wasn't passed out when he had sex with me. So to not put yourself in this type of situation where you have to question "Is she coherent enough to agree to sex and even more so, remember it tomorrow?" How about just NOT take a drunk girl home PERIOD to avoid putting yourself in a position to where you could be accused of rape cause if she has no memory of it.. then that's what it is.. She wasn't sober enough to give consent.

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2021/01/04/promising-young-woman-a-societal-revenge-flick-explained/#comment-1100370">Luke Oakridge</a>.

Ok Luke, let's talk about this idea rationally. Let's go with a thought experiment. And I'll skew the entirety of the hypothetical in your direction. This is a husband and a wife. Legally married. Bound by law. Now. Let's make the wife drunk. Better yet, let's put her in lingerie, on the husband's birthday. And let's also say that this wife always gives a special bed-time performance for his birthday every single year. Ok? They are kissing, and undressing... just accelerating into this thing faster than you can even imagine.

But at the last second... this wife says, "actually no. Nope, nope nope nope." The husband though continues on with it and has sex with his wife, and all the while she is saying, stop? Is this ok? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Logic just screams that this isn't ok.

Now as to your objection that the standard should be the same, it is! Now let's flip that example. It's still the same setup. But the guy says no. He's too drunk though to fend her off. And she continues on with it anyway. Is this okay? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Will he go to the cops and press charges? No. Why? Because it'd be humiliating to his ego to say to the police that he was just "raped" by his WIFE. But could he? YES. Because that is literally what she just did.

Luke, it's your attitude about women that has normalized sexual aggression against women as a norm... and it has to stop. You are literally the idea this movie is pointing at. You said we should have a coherent and logical discussion... I'm all for that. But can you handle stopping, and thinking that maybe, just maybe, your idea of what sexual assault looks like was formed in the norms of 1952?

I am the author of this piece, and yes, this idea is arcane and highly misogynistic. Definitely. But that's obvious. The bigger take away of your comment is that it is horrifyingly normal to think the way you do. You are, without a doubt, in the majority of how men think on this issue. Does it mean that it is right? ABSOLUTELY NOT. And we, as a society, need to grow up - to learn that our ideas about women are horrifyingly abusive towards women. If a woman is kissing you and hugging you... and she let's you know she is tapped out? You have to stop. I don't care how you two got to this moment. Whether you are married or not. And you know what? It's probably wise to, as a general rule, err on the side of caution. She's drunk, seems maybe to be into it? But, now something has turned? really? This is who you want to be? That guy? Really? And now you are going to ride the statistics I quoted in the piece that say that almost zero of these horrible encounters aren't reported as your idea for safety? Really? This is the guy you want to be? Just hoping for a little action regardless of the repercussions in her life, in yours?

I would say to that - aim higher. Live a better life than this. Hell, if you can't get a woman to have sex with you this side of being drunk? You really need to consider what kind of human being you really are. I'm not specifically talking to you right now Luke, but rather this idea that many men have. So please don't take it personally. Just giving you my LOGICAL response to this idea.

As for the morality of Cassie attacking men who get with drunk women, it all depends on whether the women were active participants in the sex or not. If a woman is passed out and is groped, then obviously that is sexual assault. But if a woman kisses and hugs then that by definition means that she is not drunk enough for it to be sexual assault. If someone is drunk and throws a brick through a window, they get arrested. If someone is drunk and has sex, then they are responsible for that too. And a man who is drunk and has sex can still be charged with rape. Why should we have a different standard for women? There should be one standard for everyone regardless of gender.

I'm sure someone, perhaps the author of this piece, will accuse me of misogyny, but it isn't. It is just basic morality. It is about treating people fairly.

Also (because I know how comments usually go on the internet) I'll save you all some trouble and say that all of the women I've had sex with were sober at the time.

Think about the issue rather than reacting with emotion.

Btw, the reply to link still is broken. Hard Candy was some real darkness but the movie made no bones about showing exactly what she was up to. I think that’s what was missing here. It’s kind of only alluded to. Plus it’s a bit uneven how she doles out justice as you mentioned. There’s definitely some restraint which could be intentional. With the part of the Dean, I think that often colleges try to hide incidents like this so they don’t hurt the reputation of the school so politics comes into play instead of doing what is right by the student. So I think terrifying her that her daughter had been left in a similar predicament was a good punishment because she wouldn’t have actually wanted to truly harm the daughter who was an innocent party. I think Hard Candy is Page’s best work and it’s a shame almost no one has actually seen it. Anyone who liked this film should definitely watch that one next.

I agree. Especially since she dies in the end. If you had crossed this with Hard Candy you'd have the perfect female revenge movie I think. Which is funny, because no one has seen Hard Candy.

I thought it interesting how she worked very hard to dance a two step around the immorality of what she was doing. Make the dean think she ruined her daughter... but didn't. Make her friend think she was pillaged by some guy she paid... but didn't. And yet, if it weren't for that blood on her hand while eating that hotdog, she might have avoided the outright immorality of the situation... and maybe been justified in surviving the ending. Dunno. But I liked the timed messages twist. But maybe that's just me.

I mentioned this on Discord but I felt this movie was a bit restrained if that makes any sense. What I mean is that I think Cassie could have been portrayed a bit darker with her nighttime activities. What I absolutely loved was the color and how she was portrayed during the day in an extremely feminine way. Pink fuzzy sweaters and flowered dresses. I also read the same guy who did the teen show Sweet Valley High was responsible for the set and wardrobe. It’s just very incongruent with her night time antics which makes it all the more disturbing. I’m not even going to comment on the morals of what she’s doing because well, I’m just not. I really enjoyed this one for what it was.
