If Steve was able to transport his dog by holding him, why didn’t he try the same with Brianna on a first attempt back to the present? Then there’s still one pill remaining.

I need to find their other films mentioned!

Upon reflection, I don't believe Steve carved "allways" either. But I have discovered two things, that the spelling "allways" was sometimes used in personal writing in the 15th and 16th century (though not in print) and there is also a family surname of "Allway." Either could explain why a person of the time period had carved the rock. As others have pointed out, the odd spelling makes for an interesting double-meaning and reference to the fluidity and infinity of time itself. Since Synchronic is not a time-loop story, I doubt that the rock inscription was introduced as one.

There are so many plotholes (I'm tempted to say idiocies) in Synchronic, but the one that's annoying me the most that no one mentioned is The Carved Boulder. Why did it look like ALLWAYS was carved in silly putty? How and when did Steve "carve" the rock? How long was he at it? what on earth did he use to do it? Why was Dennis' wife so annoying when it was Dennis who was supposed to be the bad guy? Who called the paramedics to the original couple? Why did the elevator guy have a goofy grin on his face? I like the actor who played Steve, and I liked that Brianna was a sweet girl and not an obnoxious brat. But sheesh, like Taylor says, for a movie that so much work went into, it could have been so much better and more coherent.

I was also disappointed in this movie after having watched Resolution and The Endless. Obviously this movie was unrelated to those 2. The concept was intriguing, but too many easy answers, the worst in my opinion being that Steve actually found Brianna alive amongst all the dead bodies and all the bombing. I could see it coming, but it was too easy a resolution (no pun intended!) to the movie. Also, how is it that Brianna taking the Synchronic pill returned her to the point where Steve jumped back to the past? Shouldn't it have caused her to travel even further back in time for 7 minutes?

The entire issue with this movie is their previous movies. Since we know they are capable of writing films that will make your head explode, having this one be so simple turns out to be a let down. Had we not had the previous 3 great films from them I don’t think we’d be so hard on this one.

Like others pointed out, it's Steve who carved Allways on the rock. When he's rescuing Brianna he tells her they figured she disappeared in that location because of the message she left on the rock and she says something like, 'what message?' indicating she's not the one who carved it. Steve then realizes that he's the one who's going to carve it, that he's the one who will leave a message there for himself in the future (which is now his past).

In terms of whether Synchronic is in the same universe as Resolution and The Endless, I think it is due to how they all lean heavily on the concept of time and our perception of it; how time is an illusion. How our comprehension and experience of time is limited because of our inherently limited nature as humans. And how specific places or substances expand our experience and understanding of time.

However, not all Benson and Moorhead films are in a shared universe; the movie Spring is definitely on its own and unrelated to Resolution, The Endless and Synchronic.

I think this movie was more like an audition for what they can do with a bigger budget. The cinematography (like in The Endless) is gorgeous and the special effects are really good too. I really loved the music and the opening sequence was quite breathtaking. But it's too linear and simplistic and everyone who loved their previous movies would probably be left a bit underwhelmed after watching this. At least the ending was poignant and semi-ambiguous. I'd really hate it if they went on to direct a Marvel movie after this.

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2021/02/01/synchronic-movie-recommendation-and-whine-fest/#comment-1104318">Matt</a>.

Totally agree Matt. 1) The black guy time traveling bit should have been THE THING. 2) the Resolution/Endless should have been THE THING. 3) The "do something with the time you have" should have been THE THING. It's like the guys got their shot and tried to do too much with it. I disdained this movie more than I even explained, and it was almost 100% disappointment from knowing what they are capable of. But at the end of the day, I wanted my answers to the chaos of Endless and Resolution. WE DESERVE ANSWERS DANGIT. Sorry. that was loud. My bad.

If I remember correctly there was something about Steve and his spelling at another point in the film or maybe I’m making it up? I don’t really remember but the whole Civil War thing just wound up coming off silly. Brianna surviving days in a trench seemed unlikely. Even with a sci fi movie based on total fiction, the plot should make some kind of sense. We only got the bit of exploration of where the drug takes you when Steve was doing his test runs and I found that to be the best part of the film and I wish they had expanded on that instead of the family drama plus cancer angle. The creator committing suicide also made no sense. His entire part seemed to be a waste of a storyline since we see him for all of 2 minutes. I wonder if cuts were made to this film for running time and if somehow we could have ended up with a better version.
