Nice synopsis and commentary. I loved the movie in all its quirky, head-scratching glory. I thought the point of the ending was merely to highlight the irony that without humans to power these robots (literally to plug them in), they would not survive. And so it is us humans who are wreaking our own destruction by failing to see that we are in fact still in charge (for now), and could stop the madness. This is true at the large scale, and the robots in the movie are just a stand-in for tech that enslaves us. We could in theory (as John in the film says) stop it, but we don't, so we get what we get. I thought the use of quantum computing as the latest tech was an interesting choice. At some point, the robots will be able to plug themselves in and when that happens (the singularity or whatever), we lose the game forever.

Whoa - you suggest that one robot escapes, and somehow makes it to maybury avenue and that the couple there just plug it in, that perhaps the monopoly company use civilians to charge their robots????

No- The robot that survives is expected by the couple that plug it in (and it needs them to plug it in). That couple are the key to the whole film. (They are like the folk selling pick handles to the miners in the gold rush, renting out their garage) but it turns out that more than that - they have actually created their own robot to run routes for them, while they sit at home.

Not sure why this was included at the end of a film "about" capitalism? Except that perhaps it shows why capitalism keeps on delivering, despite the fact that it exploits so many - because it also enables enterprise, even in "monopoly" conditions

In reply to <a href="https://taylorholmes.com/2021/02/18/lapsis-movie-recommendation-and-ending-explanation/#comment-1123951">Abe Alexander</a>.

Thanks Abe,
glad I could help clarify a little bit of maybe what was going on. What a fun little movie. Really enjoyed it. And if it helped change your opinion about the ending, then I'm really happy it helped. As for the vocab, it's funny, I try not to throw quarter words out. I really actively attempt to play it lower key. It's funny, I used to work with people all over the world, and every time I was told to present to an international crew, my management would be like - dude, dial it back. And I'd get up in front of them and my words would get ENORMOUS. "Polyglot", "Suprasubliminal", "Phantasmagoric", and the like... the simple words would just run for cover. And only the polysyllabic would remain. It's like a mental disorder really. When I read, my brain will unconsciously find the complicated words, and capture them, and wrap them into pearls, constantly repeating them, turning them over and over again... it's quite annoying really. And in a funny way it happens with fiction too - Shadow and Bone? Their fake words throughout do that to my brain too. Anyway, sorry about that. Wasn't my intention!! I promise.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words.

Excellent review. I also enjoyed some of the vocab you used. I had to look up a word on more than one occasion which is always fun. We were completely confused at the end so your review was a relief. Also, the symbolism you brought up between the movie and the tech revolution greatly enhanced my overall opinion of the movie.

Nice overall synopsis and takes on the movie. I quite liked it as well. The concept, dialogue, editing, and performances by Imperial and Wise made for a strong piece of work. As for the ending, any thoughts on the apparent home owners (suburban scum?) at 54 Mayberry telling Ray they don't offer charging, but then the man/husband picking up the bot and plugging it in to charge? Seems they don't allow charging for the cablers, but they do for the automated devices that are a constant threat to the cablers' income. I'm guessing they get paid for that, but don't allow cablers to charge cuz they don't get a cut for allowing them to use their electricity. Stockholders, too?
