Lisa, you speak such truth. The only real experience I had with help care facilities was when my paternal grandmother was taken to live in one when her Alzheimer’s got too bad. The nursing home was sad and looked neglected and that was back in the 90’s. It really is a ‘get what you pay for’ situation in Texas, at least in Houston. My mil may not be my favorite person, but without her I wouldn’t have my man, so we keep her near. She lives in her own home, but we both make sure she has the help she needs, when she needs it. And....yes I loved NJC, that was the film we watched on my senior skip day. I especially loved Wesley Snipes as Nino Brown. Hey, if he had been born with money and proper education he’d would have been the Black Warren Buffet.

It’s a classic! I have to say I liked Nino more than I liked Marla even though he was the lord of a crack empire. I’m a caregiver full time to my mom and it’s scary what can happen in these so called care facilities. I don’t know about where you live but here they are all horrible and I’ve heard nothing but horror stories. My grandma went into one when she could no longer stay at her home and immediately took a fall out of her bed and never recovered. You just have no idea what is happening and it’s a scary thought. I’m sure fraud is prevalent.

I love/hated this movie. The character of Marla so had it coming that I actually clapped by myself when she was offed in the end. Yeah, the plot is a bit goofy at times but it’s a really fun watch especially since it ends as it should. Well, the Russian mobsters still win but they were kind of the victims here I guess? Sometimes we need a film that doesn’t take itself super seriously. I think casting Peter Dinklage as an evil Russian mobster pretty much indicates the film isn’t taking itself so seriously but he does great!

I have to say I enjoyed this movie. Well mostly, until it got all Oceans Elevenish on me. One aspect of the movie I really enjoyed was Rosamund Pike’s acting. She really does play an antihero actor. Her character is unapologetic about the fact that she grew up without money and hey that life sucks. She kinda reminds me of a young white female Nino Brown from New Jack City. She sees an opportunity to make some money in a brilliant thought out business model. It’s Illegal and unethical, but still brilliant. Her plan really was genius and probably borrowed from reality.

And the social commentary like you mentioned... she just couldn’t live through this one. She was a bad egg, after all. She had all the stereotypical negative characteristics... the scheming wanna get rich by any cost, soul cycle, immaculate straight hair ( for real how does her hair stay that straight!), alternative life style choices (oh, she’s a lesbian too!) I kind of wanted her to make it through this movie. She’s bad, but so are SOOOOOOOOOO many men in our society. I’m sorry did I add too many OOs? They have made money on the backs of the poor, young, old, and everything in between. These grifters, mobsters, robber barons, and oilmen have lived to a ripe old age passing down their billions to their families that will continue in the family business.

Yeah, there’s also something to be said about how Americans as a society treat our elders. In other countries, elders are revered and honored. They are brought into the family household where they are taken care of until they die. Americans, that’s just not how we roll. Maybe because most Americans are having a difficult time taking care of themselves and just can’t afford to take care of their elders. Maybe it’s because their elders were mean as hell and all the therapy in the world can’t cure you from that. I don’t know the answer, but it’s definitely a social problem properly placed in this movie for a reason. As for me my mil lives ten minutes away from me and that as close as I can stand.
