What I liked most about this film was that it wasn’t overly political or told from one side. Think about after 9-11. America was probably as united as we have been in a very long time before we invaded Iraq. And I won’t get into my feelings on that here. But this is from the perspective of the detainee, his lawyer and also the prosecution trying to make a case with actual valid evidence. As a red blooded American we are led to believe that justice will always prevail. But I don’t think anyone can believe what happened at Gitmo was right. People being detained for years and years with no charges, no court room, nothing. And then when the time came when they did have to make a case the methods used to obtain info were horrendous to say the least and a person would have said their mother was a terrorist at that point to make it stop so the information that was obtained was useless. But this movie paints a scathing portrait of all political sides because while this man was detained and tortured under Bush, it was the Obama admin that failed to let him out even when it was ruled he should be released. If you have a grasp of our history with the Middle East you would know what you mentioned here about those who possibly trained with Bin Laden before 9/11. But this man’s connection to the 9/11 plot was super thin at best. He had left years before and his connection amounted to receiving a phone call from his cousin who was still active. I’m sure there are hundreds if not more stories like this out of Gitmo and if watching this doesn’t outrage you then that’s what really scares me because it’s so far down the rabbit hole and far away from what our founding fathers envisioned for this country. As sad as this film is, it should be required viewing. Plus I was happy to see the end portion where he’s back home and free and cranking some Dylan!
