I think he definitely had a hand in the drowning of his cousin as he didn’t seem new to killing or trying to kill in the film. Up until everything fell apart he was pretty good at being a fraud and taking credit for others achievements. I don’t think I could watch this film 10 times, though. Once was enough for me!

Oh hell, I just read your book synopsis and in no way will I be reading that. I loved that George got his comeuppance in the movie. One thing it doesn’t seem anyone else thought was that he killed his cousin. Murdering someone on a small boat is not easy- esp making it look like drowning- as he was making Floyd’s death seem. He had told him his cousin drowned on the boat. He stole and took credit for the miniature paintings his cousin had done. All in all, he was a typical sociopath egotist.

I love this movie and watch it about 10 times a day. I’m not certain what is unsettling about it to me, but somethings working it’s way up and out of my subconscious for sure. I’m on the net trying to locate where the desk lamp is from on their entryway desk is from- if that tells you how many times I’ve watched the movie- ask me any detail.

I like what you have to say, Larissa. George was horrible and he was a total fraud! He stole from his cousin to appear he was a painter and faked a recommendation to get a job. Not to mention killing and trying to kill to cover up what he did. Men like that sometimes take their inadequacy out on those around them, especially their wives. He made it seem like he was doing her a favor by marrying her when she got pregnant even though she left behind a great job in the city that she deserved to be at. So yes, it was definitely about abuse on that level.

Okay, first time commenting here, but big fan of this website and the movies you recommend. Sometimes I'll watch a movie and the following week, here it is cause you watched it too lol
ANYWAYS, this movie: what I understood is that it is actually not about ghosts or spirits or a bad husband. It is about domestic abuse. The way I see it, the whole movie is kind of an allegory of how abusive and violent relationships work. George did EVERYTHING that women suffer in these relationships: he gaslighted her, he forced her to be isolated her from friends and family, he cheated and he hurt her until he killed her. And he was almost getting away with it. Which is, unfortunately, still very real until this day and age.
So basically that's how I feel about it. I loved this movie and the horrible feeling in the end is very similar to how I feel whenever I see another woman being a victim of a violent man.

Thanks for this website, it is my all time favorite!

I just love that you go all in on these films and actually read the books as well. I mean, that is dedication to one’s craft. We’ve discussed this film a lot on Discord and I don’t have much else to say about it. The actors were all wonderful and I always love seeing F Murray Abraham who makes me want to perpetually watch Amadeus but something about this film just rubbed me wrong. I can’t even really pinpoint what. Also, Willis wasn’t his student but rather a student of another college taking a break to help at the horse stables but it’s not a super important plot point anyway. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy seeing Georgie boy sucked into the gates of Hell, though!
