Too much emphasis on technique and it takes me out of the sense of being somewhere else and leaves me simply feeling like I am watching a movie. Exactly the impact The Shape of Water had on me, too. But I will give The Devil’s Backbone a try.

Yep. I can’t deny it. Truth be told, I never felt immersed by it. It was visually dazzling, yes, but I never was taken in by it. Too fantastical, I guess. I felt like a spectator. Perhaps I’ll give it another try some day.

Like this film, the historical setting is important to the story and while it’s not quite as fantastical as this film, I actually liked it better. I figured it was a given when you posted the list! The beauty of the fairy tale v the horror of the reality was very powerful, and the story telling, cinematography and monsters were wonderful.
