agree with your points here except that you think your readers are closer to the 1% than they think. no no no. the working class is not wealthy. even the middle class is not wealthy. my dad would like to think he is close to being rich as he thinks business dudes who hide their money offshore are “smart” but he doesn’t realize that money being taxed would benefit all of us. what we should be doing is showing people like tech bros (who think they are rich making $200k salaries) that they are actually closer to the lower class than they are to the 1%. then maybe they will have some solidarity and some empathy

Well, it just turns the chaos into a crazy circle that the official at the wedding is ultimately related to the kidnapping and the killing of Marianne to cover that up at the end and use Marta and Cristian. Some back story would have been cool but I don’t really think it’s necessary to watch the film. It seems like the “have nots” have reached some kind of breaking point and have turned murderous to change that! There was a scene during the chaos at the house where people are being killed and one of the maids is smiling while emptying drawers to steal their belongings. I found this insanely disturbing!

Yeah,
It made sense to me that the various connections and ties between the shadowy figures sort of led back to the wedding – but I was so overwhelmed by just the surface chaos, and downward spiral, all of that really didn’t even matter. Okay, so the new government were wedding guests, and okay, so they use their knowledge to bribe the family the were just guests at… okay. Sort of made sense that that was happening at every level. From maids, and nannies, to policemen, to government officials… the entire country has lost its collective mind. Got it.

I’d be interested to hear more about how this uprising “spontaneously” occurred. Like, what was the tipping point. Where did the match come from that started the explosion. But generally, it’s a mind-numbing-mind-jarring experience all the way around.

I think it’s important to note that the government official we see at the wedding who winds up leaving early actually seemed to me to be behind this all or at least very much involved. The military was working for someone much higher-there’s a conversation between the soldiers mid movie about the cut they are supposed to get from the kidnappings and they decide to go rogue and ask for more for Marianne and that’s when everything goes haywire and Marta and Cristian are used as cover up scapegoats when in fact they were truly trying to help get her back home. At least this is what I understood to be happening which is why I said it was one of the most effed up films I’ve ever seen. Everyone’s hands were dirty and the protestors/robbers were kind of used as a cover for the kidnappings and cash grabs from the rich families by the government and military. There’s a lot to unpack in this film. A lot. It left me feeling quite disturbed.
