Ah, I see. No longer eating apples because he hopes to get the actual memory loss virus, or whatever causes the disease, and doesn't want the apples to prevent infection/disease onset. That makes sense. Yeah, that's a valid interpretation, for sure! I buy it. Thanks for your input!

I still stand by my theory he was faking it. He desperately wanted to have memory loss and to get a new life and forget his trauma but he ultimately learns to deal with it.

Him stopping eating apples was just wishing for the memory loss. There are many clues that support the fact he was just trying to escape his current life. First being he manages to find his way into the new life program after hearing about it.

But he just could not abide with the program ultimately and goes back home. If you recall, there is no good prognosis for the memory loss disorder so he would not have been able to recall anything even in little bits.

What makes this film so great is the dialogue we are having about it. It’s been a while since I watched it but I remember it clearly because it was such a great film. So few of those lately!

I may have to rewatch as well! I do see how the film supports multiple readings, depending on how you weigh different key moments.

And maybe I was wrong about the car crash thing (which I thought was just a bit of humor about not remembering how to brake) and that was indeed the task. The program directors did indeed become more bold and idiosyncratic in their prescribed tasks, haha.

Also, the main purpose of the hospital's program isn't to jog patients' past memories, it's to give them a new life. The program is called "New Identity," after all, not "Remember Your Old One." The medical staff also state that they think there's no cure for the retrograde amnesia. This does not mean that it's impossible that Aris legitimately loses and recovers part of his memory, however. He is just the first known patient to do so, and his consistent apple consumption is likely the reason why. A real-world study has shown that drinking apple juice may improve memory by preventing the decline of acetylcholine, an essential neurotransmitter. So, what the grocer says has real truth to it.

The biking and driving tasks, however, are indeed to help muscle memory so that patients can regain mobility (and by the way, the driving task does not involve purposefully crashing into a tree; Aris and Anna just forgot how to brake successfully).

The purpose of the tasks as I see it is to get people to have various life experiences so that they don't just isolate. And by doing the tasks, they can discover things they like, some of which they may have never tried in their past lives. This helps them to form new lives.

All in all, it's a touching and fascinating movie!

Your "debunk" of Theory #1 mentions a plot detail that for me is the key support that Theory #1 is sound.

To me, he has to have had actual memory loss because he stops eating apples when he hears they are good for one's memory. Over the course of the film, he regains some memories (the dog's name, knowing that he didn't have a good relationship with the dog's owner, his old apartment number) and then, most importantly, remembers that he lost his wife. This is deeply painful for him. When he hears that apples are good for one's memory, he stops eating them because he doesn't want to remember more about the woman he loved and then lost. The more he remembers about her, the stronger his feeling of grief. At the film's end, he decides to stop running away from the pain of his past and starts eating apples again. He chooses to face his grief and remember more about himself and the love of his life.

If he never lost his memory at all, there would be no real reason for him to stop eating apples when he hears they are good for one's memory, because his memory would essentially be constant. Stepping away from his life by purposely being in the program would not actually make him forget his wife. If someone loses a loved one, no amount of vacations or retreats will cause them to legitimately forget who their loved one was. So, if he never actually lost his memory, I don't think that learning that apples are good for one's memory would cause him to suddenly abandon his favorite food.

Finally watched this fantastic film! I immediately got it! after the film ended. He did not have amnesia. He faked it so he could start a new life. The dog and the address clearly show that he knew them. I did not see that her name was Anna. I could have missed it. I think her using him for the one night stand was to get that particular task done. And when he finds out it was simply a task to do, he was hurt because she used him. He then realizes all these tasks are useless and goes back to his old life. Going to the gravesite of wife made him realize his love for her was more important then giving up his life with her. But, now I need to know was the woman's name Anna??

I need someone else to watch this movie already so we can debunk all of Taylor’s theories together. I mean it was soooooo obvious he never had amnesia to begin with. The house number, the dog he knew the name of and running away from the owner whom he obviously knew plus knowing all the words to the song. It doesn’t make sense that he would be the only one of thousands to recover his memory when no one else had. He was grieving and wanted a new start or a reprieve from his lonely life so he hopped on a bus and pretended to be an amnesiac since he had just heard the radio broadcast about the treatment at the hospital so he knew he would be brought there. He then goes through all the motions of the ridiculous treatment tapes and it doesn’t help him forget what he’s going through. At the end he realizes he can’t escape his life and his grief so he goes back home and then visits his wife’s grave. If the woman he met and had sex with in the bathroom had been his wife then it wouldn’t have gone down the way it did and I highly doubt he would have his from her when she came to see him. Plus if he had just been searching for his missing wife there wouldn’t have been a funeral so quickly and he would have been able to locate her through the hospital program where we saw that other relatives came to rescue their amnesiac kin.
