I stumbled across your site right after watching Silent Night well searching for confirmation(?) of my “Zombie Apocalypse and The Big Chill Remake Had a Crack-baby Love Child Movie Specifically Targeted For An ADHD Audience Eating Ritalin-buttered Popcorn” theory.

I haven’t seen Rent-A-Pal, but going by your succinct yet simply explained movie synopsis (, w/SN, too) , as I was reading your words right off from the beginning I immediately was reminded of Fight Club!

Same thing, just released the year prior: mousy under-dogged bullied below-average Joe & outcast Loner finally meets a real boy and gets a friend! And eventually grows a pair. Seems totally sane and normal and you’re finally kinda happy for the putz, only to slowly realize it’s not so sane and the fucker’s batshit and you’re just slowly watching him go insane and seeing his hallucinations, how HE’s perceiving Reality. *cue high-speed flashbacks / roll credits*

Anyone else get this vibe from it? I mean Hollywood is notorious for whoring films out the second some kind of screenplay / movie w/a new style or mind-F twist at the end gets a huge buzz and makes money. Everyone else in the biz has gotta ride those coat-tails to the bank, too.

The Sixth Sense, also ’99, identical storylines ne development, but switched out Krazay fer Dead!

I’m def gonna see if my Library has Rent-A-Pal, cuz I’m like 99% certain that’s where I rent seeing a trailer for it. (I also have a theory re: librarians and the horror genre in general as it’s the #1 place to go for way off the Box Office B-horror & direct to video flix, man!! And Nick Cage’s latest)

I watched this one a while back and I don’t recall why I never mentioned it on Discord but it’s definitely not a happy film and I can’t really say I enjoyed it. I think David is obviously unstable and messed up from his father’s departure and his life that is made up completely of caring for his mom. I can kind of relate to this as I’m a FT caretaker for my mom as well. But I think he’s obviously very impressionable and just not quite there in the head. He believes the tapes are talking to him personally and obviously they are not! So between his loneliness and being so unstable it’s a recipe for disaster!

As an aside, I had Netflix in 2001 when they would send DVDs in the mail. I was so excited every time I got a new movie then the DVD would be scratched and skip and I would then not be happy! I was so thrilled when they started hosting the videos on the website!

Glad you finally watched this, Taylor! Yup, it’s a depressing, albeit thought-provoking film. Definitely mind-jobby. I think he was becoming increasingly delusional. Poor guy.
