First let me get this out. I loved watching this movie. Not because it was great but just because it was nice to revisit this story for a few more hours. If you are a diehard Matrix fan that followed the animation shows and the video game then chances are you are going to hate this film or be seriously underwhelmed by the lack of action and the amount of dialogue. This is very much a love story more than an action flick. Even the original film was a love story but with a lot more action. I always took issue with the plot point in the original when Neo comes back to life from a kiss like Sleeping Beauty but I think I’ve softened on it over the years now that I have a better grip on what these films were actually about. Hope and love. The fact that Neo and Trinity are kept alive near each other for the energy they produce is endlessly corny but again, this is a love story. Then when she ultimately saves him we are left with a feeling of hope since the 3rd film pretty much ended on a sad note even though a bargain had been struck for peace.

I didn’t really make note while watching this about how it was filmed but on reflection, you are right- it lacks the gritty feel of the first 3 films and seems a bit too glossy to fit in.

As for NPH, I adored his character. I found how they worked him in to be amazingly clever. I definitely laughed when he showed his true colors.

As for Morpheus, I think due to his age it wouldn’t have been realistic to bring him back. At least not in human form due to the time jump. I guess they could have made him a machine much like the new Morpheus so I’m unsure why that wasn’t done. He definitely was missed.

What I loved most about watching this film was the meta aspect and inside jokes that let you know the film wasn’t taking itself too seriously at times. Especially in the beginning when we see Neo as a run down rat in a maze and he’s all about ready to give it all up. As viewers we know he’s going to be in for a very big surprise and I enjoyed his reluctance to jump back into the “reality” of the situation as he had been living his sad simulation for so long.

So if you aren’t looking for this film to be anything more than a nostalgia trip then I think you will enjoy it. If you are looking for more, well….
