Just finished watching it. Liked it a lot. I thought the plot was pretty straightforward— Blake got to see how actual mothers protect their children, so it shouldn’t have been that hard a choice to make to side with them over the obnoxious Gibson and the obnoxious “Mud” guard who figured this was her (his) lucky day. Nice touch and quick thinking using the poison pill.

PS. The boy Neil said the man that was being held down by the engine room (turning out to be his real father) was “Christopher Columbus”. This also points directly to my theory.

From my opinion it was not a good moive. It was boring and low syfy. It was hard to even hard to think of this being the future if their space pods were the same Neil Armstrong used. Some low syfy are good like “A Boy and His Dog”. It had better writing, story line and acting.
I came here for the same reason. I was puzzled about why Blake wanted to prove fertility then the second later she didn’t. When Gibson went to the weather station I thought he want to send out that it was not fertal. He even mentioned that all the women would be too old when they returned. But it was the opposite. This puzzled me for I wasn’t sure which result he, or she wanted to send. But I feel like the whole story was a rerun of discovering America. We came here took over the Indians (mud people in this movie) thought we were better and destroyed the earth as a result. I think Blake and her father had a realization of this and came to the conclusion that with a second chance the Indian (mud people) should flourish and we should peril.

in response to MatteWizard’s comment, I think you are right that, logically it would make sense to focus on the survivors of earth. But i think that was part of the movie’s point, the Keplers were so self-obsessed and convinced they are this “master race” that they dissociate the survival of their “race” with the inhabitants of the planet.

You seem to have answered your own question.

Blake’s father abandoned his promise to come back because he saw that humanity didn’t need the Keplers. And by them returning they would only intermingle with the population and by that it would mean that they would almost have to force potentially unwilling “mud people” to be the host.

But why… Thats what Blake’s father asked himself. If humanity is living on just fine.. Then the Keplers are just going to potentially ruin it. So he abandoned his promise “for the many” just that the “many” was now those on earth and not those back home.

As for the school I think it was a way to educate them and make them better suited to mate with in the future. He was training pseudo Keplers.
