I didn't really care for this film. I don't understand why she took the doll. My first thought was that Leda wanted to punish the child because she wouldn't leave her mother Nina alone. Being a real pain, as Leda's daughter was to her. Now I do not have children. My choice. And I can see how kids can be annoying and needy. Which for me would drive me nuts. The ending? Never crossed my mind that Leda was dead. Maybe she just realized that she loved her daughters, or was grateful for having them.

Of course it did but the main characters were so unlikable that I couldn’t enjoy the film at all. There’s lots of choices in life that can be undone but walking away from your children? I’m not down with that. Plus, I never got the feeling that Leda’s husband was purposely trying to hold her back. Perhaps she should have considered wanting to take off to the US to be an academic before having 2 children. Her realization that her kids were actually important to her came just a tad too late.

It didn't cross your mind that this was what the movie was about? hahaha. You prove the point of the book in a single comment. Well done.

Ok, I finished your write up now and I just didn’t like this film at all. Probably because as a mother I know what it’s like to make sacrifices for your child. I get that she wanted an academic life but perhaps she should have thought about that before having children. Her decision to just up and leave them left me feeling disgusted. And then she latched herself onto another bad mother who seems more interested in having an affair with the guy that works there than her own kid. She’s just annoyed the doll is missing because her daughter is upset over it and she’s looking for peace and quiet. So to me this film was about extremely selfish people. Is she dead or alive? Eh, I don’t really care!

Just an FYI that you have it backwards. They were living in the UK and she took off to the US (I think to Cambridge or Boston?) and left her daughters behind with her husband in the UK.
